Aris Saloniki vs AE Larissa Match Preview

A 2-0 win over Atromitos saw Aris return to winning ways in Greek Super League action last Sunday. Many had tipped Hector Cuper’s side to up amongst the league leaders; however 4 defeats from 8 matches have left the team in 7th place.

The good news is that Aris are entering a portion of their schedule that is easier compared with the opening part of their campaign. Having already played the likes of the big three (Oympiakos, Panathinaikos, and AEK) and bitter rivals PAOK, the stage is set for Aris to climb up the table assuming they can defeat some of the teams languishing toward the bottom of the standings.

Larisa’s 3-0 win against Xanthi last time out may have turned around the team’s season and saved the job of Giannis Papakostas. The club are not out of the woods yet by any means as unlike Aris they have yet to play the most difficult part of their schedule.

Away matches to Aris and Panathinaikos next weekend will be a true test of this side’s credentials and two defeats could still see Papakostas back under pressure.

Larisa were unlucky not to come away with more than a 1-1 draw with Aris in Thessaloniki on Monday. Aris may have taken the lead through Nikos Lazaridis’ headed goal in the 54th minute off a Toni Calvo free-kick, however Larisa responded and should have gone on to win a match.

After dominated proceedings for most of the match and missing a whole host of chances against a tired looking Aris, Larisa found themselves chasing the match due to Lazaridis’ goal.

Unlike other times this season though, Larisa found a way to get back into the match and the substitutions of under-pressure manager Giannis Papakostas paid off.

Stephen Makinwa equalized for the away side just 13 minutes after coming on with a short-range effort. The remaining quarter of an hour saw Larisa produce two golden opportunities to take all the points.

It was not to be however as first Gabonese striker Daniel Cousin headed off the post in the 88th minute and then moments later Makinwa missed a chance to snatch his second and his side a win when he shot wide after being well-placed in the box.
