PAE APS Atromitos Athens vs Panathinaikos Athens Match Preview
Panathinaikos, fresh off their derby success last weekend against Olympiakos, look to continue their winning ways this weekend against Atromitos. Nikos Nioplias’ side gained a credible point in Russia against Rubin Kazan in a midweek Champions’ League encounter, though that 0-0 draw might ultimately not be enough to guarantee passage to the knockout stage of the competition.
Still, with their season heading in a downward spiral, the defending Greek champions summoned a big second half performance against bitter rivals Olympiakos last Saturday which saw the Greens climb to within a point of first place in the Greek Super League. Predictably, the main danger man for Panathinaikos has been Djibril Cisse who bagged a brace against Olympiakos and with 7 goals on the season leads the Super League.
Meanwhile, Atromitos have begun to feel the effects of a recent poor patch. Winless in their last four matches, Giorgos Donis’ team has been reportedly suffering from dressing room tensions. The players actually issued a joint message this week this week insisting they were united and in full support of their manager.
Though they lie near the foot of the table and are likely to be in the thick of the relegation battle, Atromitos have yet to lose at home and could yet prove to be a test for Panathinaikos. Donis’ men will be buoyed by the return of French defender Gregory Vignal.
PAE APS Atromitos Athens vs Panathinaikos Athens Match Report
Panathinaikos stayed a point off the pace in the Greek Super League with a 1-0 win over Atromitos on Monday. The game’s only goal came from Lazaros Christodoulopoulos who scored with a fine individual effort in the 70th minute.
Panathinaikos spent most of the first half in frustration as Atromitos did well closing down the midfield and disrupting Panathinaikos’ ball possession. In fact Nikos Nioplias’ team barely had a sniff of goal in the first 45 minutes with only a couple of half chances from Sidney Govou and Loukas Vyntra.
League leading scorer Djibril Cisse had a volley that missed wide just after the half. Atromitos looked like believing they could grab something from this match and keep their undefeated home effort intact and nearly took the lead on 68 minutes. Striker Henri Camara was unable to fire home seeing his effort cleared away by Kostas Katsouranis after beating Panathinaikos goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas.
Two minutes later, Panathinaikos were ahead thanks to the in-form Christodoulopoulos and though Atromitos tried to push forward, the defending league champions had little trouble holding on to their slender advantage and took the three points. Atromitos drops to joint bottom of the table with defeat.
