AO Xanthi vs Iraklis Saloniki Match Preview

Xanthi’s 3-0 defeat to Larisa confirmed what many had already known; the club are in the midst of a serious fight to avoid relegation. With a mere 6 points from their 8 matches, the club from northern Greece have it all to do if they are to avoid dropping to the second division.

This is a team that needs to find a way to score goals, their offensive record (4 goals) being worst in the league. Home matches like this one against Iraklis are surely must-wins if Xanthi want to maintain their top-flight status.

Having narrowly avoided bankruptcy in the summer, Iraklis find themselves now in the comfort of midtable security. With 5 draws already on the season, there is a sense that this could become even better if they can find a way to win some of their close matches. Against a struggling Xanthi side, this match could be Iraklis’ best chance yet to claim their first away win of the season.

AO Xanthi vs Iraklis Saloniki Match Report

A see-saw match in Xanthi saw the home team and Iraklis play out an exciting 2-2 draw. Unfortunately, that point could not drag Xanthi out of the bottom of the league table and Giorgos Paraschos was fired soon after the match ended, meaning Xanthi will be looking for their third manager of the season already.

Xanthi began brightly and took the lead inside 20 minutes as Spyros Vallas remained onside in the box and shot past Dimitris Elefteropoulos to give his side the lead. Iraklis however turned the match on its head within 10 minutes thanks to the play of their Argentine playmaker Pitu Garcia who set up goals for Bogdan Mara (21st minute) and Karim Soltani (29th minute) to give Iraklis the upper-hand 2-1.

Xanthi began the second half determined to get back on level terms and after pressing forward for an equalizer the team finally found one 17 minutes from the end when Jordan Stewart fired past Elefteropoulos.

There was drama toward the end too as Xanthi searched for the winner, but Elefteropoulos saved well on the stroke of fulltime after a volley from Thodoris Vasilakakis.

Xanthi remain in the relegation zone with the result while for Iraklis it was their 6th draw from 9 matches as they have 12 points and find themselves in 6th place.
