Olympiacos vs Panionios Athens Match Preview

Olympiakos will expect nothing less than the three points this weekend as they prepare to face off against Panionios. Though they were stung by the derby defeat to Panathinaikos, Ernesto Valverde’s new-look side have settled well into the new season and are atop the league standings with 18 points from 8 matches, one ahead of Panathinaikos.

The club managed to squeeze into the last 16 of the Greek Cup on Wednesday by defeating Ilioupouli 1-0 thanks to an 87th minute strike by Marko Pantelic. Valverde has fashioned a team full of attacking verve, however after taking the lead in last week’s derby, Olympiakos showed they are still a club in transition as they allowed two goals in the span of 6 minutes.

Panionios pulled off one of the shocks of the season with their 1-0 victory over AEK last Sunday. The embattled club, who recently fired Swedish manager Mikael Stahre after a poor start to the season, now will look to go one better by challenging the league leaders away from home.

Interim coach Akis Mantzios did well to lead the team to victory over AEK and is now being considered a possibility for permanent manager.

Olympiacos vs Panionios Athens Match Report

Olympiakos once again this season turned on the style to deliver a demolition of troubled Panionios. The away side however began brightly, buoyed perhaps by last weekend’s fine 1-0 win over AEK and frustrated Ernesto Valverde’s side for the first half hour.

Panionios even conjured up a decent chance in the 21st minute, but midfielder Fanouris Goundoulakis shot into the side netting after being set-up by Sito Riera. Riera was playing against his brother Albert and in the 34th minute it was the latter’s team who went ahead thanks to a brilliant individual goal.

On-loan Belgian striker Kevin Mirallas picked up a loose ball at midfield for Olympiakos after a mistake from Panionios defender Martin Latka and went on a charging 20-yard-run and which ended with a spectacular finish from just outside the penalty area with his left foot leaving opposing goalkeeper Juergen Macho no chance.

That sublime goal settled the home side who began to assert their dominance on the match. Just six minutes into the second half, Olympiakos made it 2-0 as Vasilis Torosidis produced a fine finish from close range after he reacted to a wayward shot by Olympiakos left back Raul Bravo.

In the 68th minute, Mirallas secured his brace after being played in by Albert Riera, the Belgian managing a composed finish to make it 3-0. The match was over as a contest at this point and Olympiakos were now turning on the style.

Mirallas narrowly missed grabbing his hat-trick minutes later, but it was 4-0 soon enough as Marko Pantelic finished into an open goal after fellow substitute Krisztian Nemeth broke through into the box and was upended by Macho, the ball however spilling right into the path of Pantelic.

Deep into stoppage time, the Erythrolefki found a fifth as talented youngster Ioannis Fetfatzidis played a through ball to Albert Riera and the former Liverpool winger fired home from inside the box.
