AEK Athens vs Ergotelis Heraklion Match Preview

AEK boss Manolo Jimenez insists he believes in his players ahead of this week’s clash with Ergotelis. The club missed a massive opportunity to drag themselves back into the thick of the title race with last weekend’s 1-0 defeat to Panionios. AEK remain five points adrift and will surely be hoping to capitalize on any slip-ups at the top of the table from now on.

Jimenez believes that the sending off of Claudio Dadomo played a crucial role in the defeat to Panionios, but has reiterated that his side can continue to climb up the league table, though he is worried about recent injuries to Papa Bouba Diop and Traianos Dellas in what he believes is already a thin roster.

Ergotelis’ heart-breaking 2-1 loss to PAOK at the death was perhaps the club’s most frustrating point of the season thus far. Giorgos Karageorgiou spoke after the match about his players being upset at the loss and stated that “the best team doesn’t always win.”

Ergotelis are a team whose season could go either way at the moment, a fight against relegation or the safety of midtable. With AEK this weekend and then a home fixture against Olympiakos the next matchday, anything the team gets from these next two matches will be deemed a positive.

AEK Athens vs Ergotelis Heraklion Match Report

AEK returned to winning ways with a 3-1 victory Ergotelis at the Olympic Stadium. The match began extremely slow and was only brought to life when Ergotelis took the lead in the 33rd minute. Michalis Fragoulakis was the scorer of a fantastic free-kick which found the top corner from nearly 25 yards.

Just as it seemed Ergotelis would go into the half with an important lead, AEK struck back on the stroke of halftime in fortuitous circumstances. Pantelis Kafes scored the equalizer after a long cross from Ismael Blanco, though Kafes knew little about, the ball hitting him in the back and bouncing into the goal.

Ten minutes after the break, it was Blanco’s turn to score as he found space in the box and planted a header past Sifis Daskalakis after a Roger Guerreiro corner. Ergotelis fought valiantly, yet they suffered again from an inability to finish the couple decent chances that came their way.

Brazilian striker Eder finished off the scoring in injury time as he beat Daskalakis to a loose ball in the box after being played through by fellow frontman Rafik Djebbour. The victory kept AEK in 3rd place with 16 points, while Ergotelis fell to 13th spot on 9 points.
