France vs Luxembourg Match Preview

Angela Asante, Oct 12th 2010
France are back on track in the Euro 2012 qualifiers! Two consecutive victories have put them on top of Group D as they prepare to entertain Luxembourg at home on Tuesday night.

Les Bleus are really starting to get their act together under new manager Laurent Blanc. We are yet to know how long France’s new look team – mostly inspired by young talents – can survive the pressure of playing at the international level. Of course, Laurent Blanc made it clear that the presence of veterans would be vital for Les Bleus who are presently missing a number of stars through suspension; Patrice Evra is part of this list.

What Coach Blanc definitely wants to avoid is to experience football and results “a la Arsenal”, one may controversially state. After suffering humiliation during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, France have admitted that they are in a transitional phase and looking to build a team “for the future”.

So perhaps, the public shouldn’t expect the impossible from those on the pitch who represent the tricolor flag at the senior level. For Les Bleus, it’s all about rebuilding France’s falling fortress brick by bricks. It may take time before fans of the French national team discover once again the kind of swagger Les Bleus had on the field between 1998 and the early stages of the 21st century.

For now, Coach Laurent Blanc will be happy with how motivated his players are to get good results. As they kicked of Against Belarus, things didn’t work out well – and perhaps they’ll have to attribute that to the fact that they were only just starting to know each other and to organize under a new manager.

However, their wins against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Romania have inject some much needed confidence within the squad. You’d expect them to trash minnows Luxembourg, but Remy prefers to be cautious as he anticipates a defensive approach from France’s opponents. Talking to Football365, Remy explained:

“There will be the same problem [that we faced against Romania]. I think I saw Luxembourg playa 4-5-1 formation. So, that won’t change.

“We will play the game of waiting and once there’s a small chance, we’ll seize it. These matches [against minnows] are traps. They shouldn’t be taken lightly. We must be wise, run the ball, and take our chances just as we did before.”

France will stretch their lead at the top of Group D to four points with a victory over Luxembourg if there is no winner in the Belarus vs Albania Euro 2012 qualifying match. In the meantime, if actually looks like Luxembourg’s chances of creating an upset are non-existent.

They have to go way back in 1914 to boast about the first and only victory they ever recorded against France. Will there be any repeat of that famous 5-4 result on Tuesday night?
