They will need a result here to avoid falling into the chasing pack. Despite falling behind 3-0 to Russia, Ireland fought back gamely with goals from Robbie Keane and Shane Long before losing 3-2. Keane and Long are players that will again be looking to provide a spark in this fixture.

They will inevitably face pressure at some point in this game and if Given can repel the danger the Irish will be a threat to gain an away win. Slovakia exerted early pressure in the second half but good defensive work by St Ledger turned away Hamsik. Tomas Hubocan then tested Shay Given with a long range shot that was saved. Slovakia pushed forward in search of a winning goal, but were left vulnerable to Irish counter attacks.
Both teams wasted one final chance to win the game in the last six minutes. Tomas Oravec missed a good chance for the home side, before Robbie Keane sent a good chance flying over the crossbar in the closing minutes.
