Switzerland vs England Match Preview

Brian Rhodes, Sep 7th 2010
Fabio Capello's England side head to Basle in Switzerland hoping to keep their 100% record intact after their four-nil demolition of Bulgaria in their opening qualifier. Switzerland will be hoping to rain on England's parade as they aim to kick off their own campaign with a solid start.

Ottmar HitzfieldOttmar Hitzfeld, the Switzerland coach, will be hoping to get the Schweizer Nati to the Euro 2012 tournament for the third tournament in a row after successfully reaching the finals in Portugal and getting a free ride with home field advantage in the 2008 Austria/Switzerland finals. Switzerland open their account in Basle against Group G leaders England and have only played Australia since their unsuccessful World Cup tournament in South Africa, despite beating the soon to be World Champions Spain in their opening World Cup match, one-nil.

The Swiss are a well organised side and the experienced Swiss coach Hitzfeld has his team physically ready and a hard unit to breakdown, as Australia found in their recent nil-nil draw. Hitzfeld’s team is predominantly made of Swiss based players with almost half of them playing for the nation’s two top clubs, Basel and Young Boys, with the rest in neighboring Italy, German and France. Switzerland will be looking to be at least on the cusp of the automatic qualification spot in the group by October 8th 2011, if not in the play-off berth.

England will be in confident mood after a fine performance in their one sided victory over Bulgaria at Wembley Stadium in London. Hat trick hero Jermain Defoe will be confident of scoring more against the Swiss. However, for Capello there is the un-needed distraction of tabloid revelations into Wayne Rooney’s private life with allegations that Rooney slept with a call girl whilst his wife was pregnant. He has been fully involved in training sessions with the rest of the England Squad though. An F.A. spokesperson maintained it was "business as usual" after suggestions that the 24-year-old, Rooney might be released from the squad.

Michael Dawson, who seriously injured his knee against Bulgaria, will be the only absentee from the squad and Capello has chosen not to call up a replacement for the Spurs player. Matthew Upson of West Ham could come into the starting line up in Dawson’s absence. But it is thought that Gary Cahill will partner Phil Jagielka as he did successfully against Bulgaria after coming on as a second half substitute for Dawson last Friday.

Fabio CapelloCapello will be instilling in his team the need to remain focused on the job at hand and to be wary of loosing concentration against the Swiss who were the only team to beat Spain (the current World and European Champions) in the past two years. The Italian will be well aware of the old German war horse Hitzfeld and his ability to get his unfashionable sides to go the extra yard, as he did to get Borussia Dortmund to win the Champions League Final in 1996/7.

It will be a big day for Swiss defender Scott Sutter, of Young Boys. The young player could easily have chosen to represent England, as his mother is English and his father is Swiss. He was raised in Potter’s Bar, London but chose to start is footballing career at the famous Swiss club Grasshoppers of Zurich, because of family ties to the city.

Switzerland vs England Match Report

The England side went into the game against Switzerland full of confidence after heavily defeating Bulgaria four-nil at Wembley Stadium on Friday evening. They have been one of the highest scoring qualifiers in all tournaments recently and tonight was no different as they ran out three-one winners away at St Jakob Park, Basle.

Capello’s team had only one change form the side that beat Bulgaria, with Jolean Lescott replacing the injured Michael Dawson. With Phil Jagielka and Lescott having experience of playing together in the center of defence for Everton their pairing made perfect sense to Capello.

Right from the start England looked to take the game to the Swiss, but it was Rooney that got the Three Lions off the mark. On ten minutes Glen Johnson powered into the Swiss penalty area and provided the neatest of crosses to Rooney who scored one of the easiest goals of his career past Swiss keeper Diego Benaglio from close range.

However, despite ending a year long International goal drought, the Manchester United striker did not celebrate. After all the stories into his personal life that had calls for him to be dropped from the squad, Capello had stuck by his first choice striker after his great display against Bulgaria.

Sadly for Theo Walcott, the build up to the goal saw him sustain an ankle injury that had him leaving the field on a stretcher. This gave Adam Johnson the chance to shine for England again, as he replaced the Arsenal forward.

Soon after England’s opener their skipper Steven Gerrard, who was reveling in his central role, played England’s hat trick hero Jemain Defoe in on goal with a wonderful cross. But the Spurs striker wastefully shot wide. Defoe again squandered a gilt edged chance from a Glenn Johnson cross, and was unfortunate as a superb piece of play from Ashley Cole saw the ball fall just behind the striker.

The thrust of Adam Johnson was soon evident as he shot just over the bar from 25 yards out. The England side almost took the game away from the Swiss on the stroke of half time as Rooney got around the keeper Diego Benaglio but Stephane Grichting managed to thwart Defoe with an impressive stop on the far post.

The Second half continued in the same vein with England applying increasing amounts of pressure, with Glenn Johnson showing why Liverpool signed him last season as his low shot was fumbled around the post by Benaglio.

The game seemed to go totally against Switzerland as the home side were reduced to ten men on 64 minutes. Lazio defender Stephan Lichtsteiner was given his marching order by referee Nicola Rizzoli of Italy after receiving a second yellow card for a foul on James Milner. The Swiss players were unhappy at the sending off, but Lichtsteiner could have no complaints.

However despite going down to ten men, the Swiss started to push forward. But following a sloppy clearance, Gerrard threaded a wonderfully weighted pass through the wide open Swiss defence for Adam Johnson to catch the Swiss off-side trap wide open. The Manchester City winger surged past Benaglio and scored on the turn from six yards out to give England a two goal lead on 69 minutes.

Unfortunately for England, any chance to take the game easy were put to bed within two minutes as Xerden Shaqiri scored an absolutely beautiful goal on 70 minutes. From just outside the penalty area, the Shaqiri shot swerved one way and then the other before veering away from the despairing dive of Joe Hart in the England goal to easily beat the English keeper.

With the game back to a single goal, England had to take the game by the scruff of the neck and Darren Bent, who had replaced the injured Defoe soon after Adam Johnson’s goal, did just that on 88 minutes. The Sunderland striker received the ball from Cole on the edge of the Swiss area before controlling the ball with one touch and the firing the ball low and hard past Benaglio’s diving right hand to give England a three-one victory and six Qualifying points in Group G.
