So what will happen when Croatia will play Greece at the Stadion Maksimir in Zagreb? Which of these two teams will pause its Euro 2012 qualifying campaign on a positive note before it resumes in October?
When Greece hosted Georgia on the opening day, they couldn’t quite make the most of their home advantage. Nikos Spiropoulos saved his side from losing as his 72nd minute equalizer cancelled Iashvili’s 3rd minue goal. Still, this wasn’t enough for the Greeks to be content with the result as Coach Fernando Santos explained:
“We weren’t expecting such a result [against Georgia]. What looked to work alright during training didn’t materialize on the pitch. We conceded an early goal, and I think this is what made us nervous and anxious. It was hard for us to control the game.”
All this will have to change if Greece want to defeat Croatia on Tuesday night. Slaven Bilic’s men dominate throughout the game against Latvia and eventually ran away with a 3-0 victory. That fired them on top of Group F ahead of Israel who defeated Malta 3-1 thanks to Benayoun’s hat-trick.
Euro 2004 champions Greece are well aware of how composed Croatia are. Coach Fernando Santos emphasized on the need of emerging victorious in Zagreb on match-day two of the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign as he stated:
"We will have to defend a lot more against Croatia than we did against Georgia. The hard part for us lies in the set up of our forward line.
That’s because opponents seem to find easy to launch counter-attacks.
"We need to learn how to organize ourselves better. We need to cover various zones and spaces properly. Against Croatia, we’ll adapt to all these better and we’ll need to play a much shorter passing game."
Greece’s problems don’t only look to be a tactical affair. Perhaps there’s also something about their level of mentality. To play Croatia away from home will definitely be intimidating, and Coach Fernando Santos want his men to focus and get the right result. The Portuguese manager declared:
"The players need to keep their cool. We’ve got quality. We’re not happy [to have only drawn against Georgia], but there’s no need to aggravate the situation. We have to correct the negatives, and take the positive aspects of that game [against Georgia] instead. I’m sure that we can change the situation."
Greece will overtake Croatia if they can defeat them in Zagreb on Tuesday night. They’ll have four points from two games with a victory, whereas anything less could see them lack five points behind Croatia.
