Latvia experienced a first round exit the only time they participated in a European Championship. That was back in 2004 when Portugal hosted the event. Now they are keen to reach the finals of the tournament again. Task number one is against Euro 2008 quarter-finalists Croatia. Can Latvia protect their five-game unbeaten record on home soil in competitive matches?
Group F is actually fairly balanced with Israel and Greece also vying for qualification as Georgia and Malta complete the section. It may seem hard to predict the outcome of Friday’s Euro 2012 qualifying match. History tells that Latvia got defeated twice by Croatia – one of these losses being experienced on home soil. Croatia’s Bosko Balaban will be remembered best for scoring four goals in total over two legs against Latvia as the Blazers reached the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea-Japan.
So Friday’s hosts may be less favored to win the encounter. However, it shouldn’t be forgotten that whereas Latvia hold a five-game unbeaten run in competitive home matches, Croatia carry the wound of a heavy 5-1 defeat away to England which smashed their chances of playing in South Africa 2010.
Latvia will line up striker Artjoms Rudņevs and Captain Vitālijs Astafjevs who will be making his 163rd appearance for the national team. Here is Latvia’s squad for the country’s Euro 2012 qualifying match against Croatia:
Goalkeepers: Andris Vanins, Deniss Romanovs, Aleksandrs Kolinko
Defenders: Aleksandrs Fertovs, Vitalijs Smirnovs, Oskars Klava, Ritus Krjauklis, Deniss Ivanovs, Kaspars Gorkss, Pavels Mihadjuks
Midfielders: Artis Lazdins, Aleksandrs Cauna, Juris Laizans, Maksims Rafalskis, Jurijs Zigajevs, Andrejs Rubins, Vitalijs Astafjevs
Forwards: Arjtoms Rudnevs, Andrejs Pereplotkins, Girts Karlsons, Maris Verpakovskis

No big surprises, but one good news as Tottenham’s Luka Modric should be fit to feature for Croatia against Latvia. Coach Slaven Bilic explained his picks as he stated:
“We have five forwards and we’ve picked all of them. We’ve got a list of around 30 players whom we expected to be candidates for a place on the pitch during our qualifying campaign.”
Goalkeepers: Stipe Pletikosa, Danijel Subasic, Vedran Runje
Defenders: Tomislav Dujmovic, Mladen Bartulovic, Darijo Srna, Jurica Buljat, Gordon Schildenfeld, Ivan Strinic, Josip Simunic, Vedran Corluka
Midfielders: Ivan Rakitic, Drago Gabric, Danijel Pranjic, Niko Kranjcar, Luka Modric, Ognjen Vukojevic, Nikola Pokrivac
Forwards: Mario Mandzukic, Nikica Jelavic, Mladen Petric, Eduardo da Silva, Ivica Olic
