Benfica are on fire. Not only have Jorge Jesus’ team racked up sixteen straight victories in all competitions; they have done so in style.The Eagles are playing with the kind of verve and energy that typified their championship triumph last season, and even managed to win in Germany on Thursday – something they had never done before in 18 previous attempts.
With the Argentine armada of Aimar, Gaitan, Salvio, Saviola and Jara firing on all cylinders, it is difficult to see anyone stopping Benfica at the moment – much less lowly Maritimo. The Madeira club are perennial challengers for European places, but have spent all of 2010/11 nearer the bottom than the top of the table.
