Uniao Leiria vs Benfica Match Preview
Arguably the match of the weekend sees 4th-placed Leiria host a 2nd-placed Benfica side that has not yet given up hope of catching FC Porto at the top of the table.
Indeed, Benfica have won nine of their last ten matches in the league, with Argentine pair Javier Saviola and Salvio clicking into top gear. The duo have scored seven goals between them in Benfica’s last three matches.
Leiria are unbeaten in six matches, but it remains to be seen how much the loss of star striker Carlao will affect them. The Brazilian marksman was responsible for 50% of his team’s goals prior to his move to Japan this transfer window.
Uniao Leiria vs Benfica Match Report
Benfica continued their hot run of form with an impressive win away at 4th-placed Uniao de Leiria.
The Eagles showed from the kick-off that they meant business, and had come close to scoring on several occasions before Saviola netted a sweetly timed volley on the turn in the 27th minute to give them the lead. The Argentine forward has now scored seven goals in his last seven matches.
Benfica continued to pour forward and Leiria goalkeeper Gottardi produced two magnificent saves to thwart Gaitan and Cardozo.
Jorge Jesus’ team were not to be denied however, and two fine team goals from Gaitan and Cardozo in the final ten minutes gave the scoreline a more accurate reflection of the difference between the two sides.
