Sporting CP Lisbon vs FC Porto Match Preview

All the talk in the lead-up to the big game of the weekend will be about the return of Joao Moutinho to Alvalade. The former Sporting captain made a shock transfer to northern rivals Porto in the close season, and has not looked back. A series of sparkling displays for the Dragons have been followed up by equally impressive performances for the national team, where Moutinho has quickly established himself as a regular.

But another player who will be looking to get one over his former employers is Helder Postiga. Just like Moutinho, the striker has rediscovered his best form, and been duly rewarded with playing time in the national team.

The league form of the two clubs has been starkly contrasting. A win for all-conquering Porto will see Andre Villas Boas’ team build a 16-point gap between themselves and Sporting, who have flattered to deceive this season, while victory for the hosts would provide a big boost to the underachieving Lisbon club.

Sporting CP Lisbon vs FC Porto Match Report

Given Porto’s scintillating form this season and Sporting’s distinctly indifferent results in 2010/11, the Dragons started the match strong favourites.

However, it was the hosts who dominated the first half. Pedro Mendes smashed a long-range shot against the bar and shortly before the interval Jaime Valdes raced onto a punt upfield from Patricio and coolly beat Helton to put the crowd in fine voice.

Coach Andre Villas-Boas must have had harsh words with his team during the break, as Porto returned with a far more determined attitude. Falcao forced Patricio into a tremendous reaction save, but there was nothing the Sporting and Portugal goalkeeper could do to keep out Falcao’s next effort, as he slid home Hulk’s neat cross.

At that stage Porto looked big favourites to go on and win the match, but a moment’s distraction by central defender Maicon allowed Liedson to steal the ball. The Brazilian stopper resorted to fouling his compatriot, and as he was the last defender the referee had no option but to send him off.

Understandably Sporting began to enjoy more of the possession, but failed to make the extra man count and the match ended all square.
