Benfica vs Sporting CP Lisbon Match Preview
Thirty-two-time Portuguese Liga winners Benfica lock horns with bitter city rivals Sporting Lisbon in the battle of the weekend in Portugal. Which team will edge the other?

It's the Lisbon derby: Benfica will host bitter city rivals Sporting Lisbon at the Estadio da Luz on Sunday night.
Seating 13th in the 16-team table is one of the worst thing Benfica could have wished for. The Portuguese Liga defending champions just have 3 points from a possible 12 having lost thrice already to Academica de Coimbra, CD Nacional de Madeira, and Guimaraes respectively.
They started the defense of their domestic title on a bad note as they lost 2-1 on match-day one at home. Thankfully for Benfica fans, the team bounced back at the Estadio da Luz with a 3-0 victory over Vitoria Setubal which actually proved to be their sole win in the Portuguese Liga so far.
However, a boost-lifting 2-0 triumph over Hapoel Tel Aviv in the UEFA Champions League could inspire Benfica ahead of this weekend’s titanic battle against Sporting Lisbon who are 5th in the table standings.
Sunday’s hosts seriously need to bounce back from their shocking poor form and controversial Paraguayan striker Oscar Cardozo could be at the centre of this dramatic change in Benfica’s team. The attacking player, who netted almost 40 goals for his team last season but suffered a terrible World Cup tournament, has been subject to criticism from his own fans.
But Cardozo found the net in midweek against Hapoel Tel Aviv and what provoked controversy was his shush gesture which upset the crowd. The striker eventually apologized to the fans before asking to put this matter to bed. Cardozo prefers to concentrate on Benfica’s chances of winning matches as he told the media:
“I think that we have been playing well this season. We have kept the same attitude, as always. It’s just that we’re lacking a bit of luck.
“Also, I have been a little bit tired because of the World Cup, but I’m getting better now. We need to think about winning all our games [after beating Hapoel Tel Aviv].
Will Oscar Cardozo offer a present to Benfica fans by inspiring the team to success in the Benfica vs Sporting Lisbon derby match? Play maker Pablo Aimar wishes for the best as he also aims to build on their midweek win in the UEFA Champions League.
“It was important to win,” Pablo Aimar affirmed.
“Our season didn’t start well. But this victory [against Hapoel Tel Aviv] came at a good time. It will be great also to win on Sunday [against Sporting Lisbon].”
Meanwhile, Sporting Lisbon need to improve on the result they suffered the last time they played at the Estadio da Luz. Losing 2-0 in front of a 59,327 capacity crowd isn’t something that Sporting would want to experience again. However, do they have what it takes to defeat Benfica on Sunday?
Without Joao Moutinho who left for FC Porto, many would predict that the best Sporting Lisbon might afford will be a point away to Benfica. Either way, like their city rivals, Sporting Lisbon also won in midweek. Kicking-off their UEFA Europa League campaign with a 2-1 defeat of Lille in France should give them quite a lot of confidence ahead of Sunday’s Portuguese Liga battle.
Sporting are actually unbeaten since losing 1-0 away to Paços de Ferreira on the first match-day of the league. How far can they stretch their undefeated run? Will it end prematurely at the Estadio da Luz against Benfica on Sunday?
