Feyenoord vs Excelsior Match Preview

“We are looking for revenge”, Mario Been said about the Eredivisie match against Excelsior. The Feyenoord coach saw his team lost the Rotterdam derby in their second match of the season 3-2 at Excelsior in August.

Excelsior and Feyenoord share their youth academy and not surprisingly many Excelsior player have a Feyenoord background. Tim Vincken, Kevin Wattamaleo and Norichio Nieveld made their Eredivisie debut for Feyenoord and Tim Eekman, Kostas Lamprou, Shabir Isoufi, Andrea Fileccia, Nayib Lagouireh and Jordy Clasie won the title with the Feyenoord sub 19 squad last season. Feyenoord players Erwin Mulder, Kamohelo Mokotjo and Luigi Bruins played for Excelsior in the past.

Mario Been also played for Excelsior and the Feyenoord coach also managed at Woudestein, being the last coach to lead Excelsior to the league championship in the Juplier League, one level below the Eredivisie in the 2005/2006 season.

On Sunday Jhonny van Beukering may make his debut for Feyenoord. The former NEC striker, who signed with Feyenoord last week scored twice in De Kuip, for Vitesse in 2001 and for De Graafschap in 2004.

Feyenoord vs Excelsior Match Report

“It surely was not a great match to watch for the public”, Luc Castaignos said about the Rotterdam derby against Excelsior in ‘De Kuip’ on Sunday. The Feyenoord striker was match winner with the only goal in the 22nd minute. Feyenoord were not relieved after their early lead and the home team were hardly able to keep possession on the midfield, because Excelsior kept the pressure on.

In the second half Johnny van Beukering made his Feyenoord debut. The striker, who was without a club after this summer before Feyenoord signed him last week, did not seem to be fit enough yet. In the past he was nicknamed Johnny van de Burgerking because he was to heavy at NEC. At his Feyenoord debut a sprint for a one-to-one with the Excelsior goal keeper ended up in a hilarious scene with Van Beukering stumbling and losing the ball. “He was running against the wind”, Mario Been joked after the match. “We know that a thirty meter run is not Johnny’s key feature.”

Been was happy with the win but not with the game. “We were scared and nervous”, the Feyenoord coach said. Next week Feyenoord travels to Ajax for ‘De Klassieker’, the Dutch version of El Clásico. “It may be clear that we’ll start as the underdog in Amsterdam.”
