Vitesse vs Ajax Match Preview
With the Eredivisie heading into the second half of the season everyone will be eyeing Frank de Boer’s league debut a Ajax’ head coach. On Wednesday the former Ajax-defender, who took over after Martin Jol left the club by mutual agreement on Monday, had a kick start in the Champions League. The Ajax squad looked astonishingly fresh and eager when they blew away AC Milan 2-0 in the San Siro stadium.
On Sunday De Boer will meet Vitesse, with Albert Ferrer on the bench. As a player Ferrer played for FC Barcelona in the nineties. He left the Camp Nou one year before De Boer arrived. They did not play together but as players they were opponents once when Chelsea and Barcelona met in the ChampionsLeague in 1999/2000. Ferrer’s Chelsea won 3-1 at Stamford Bridge, but De Boer’s Barcelona settled the affair with a 5-2 victory at home after extra time.
Luis Suarez will not be in Arnhem on Sunday. The Uruguayan striker is suspended for the next six games and the club sent him on a three week holiday. Question will be whether Mounir el Hamdaoui will be in the starting lineup. De Boer kept him on the bench against Milan during the first 80 minutes because he preferred to play with Ajax pedigree Siem de Jong in 4-3-3 formation.
Vitesse vs Ajax Match Report
“In the first half we played the way I want to see us play, we want to see us play here at Ajax”, Frank de Boer said after the 1-0 win at Vitesse at his Eredivisie debut as head coach of Ajax on Sunday. Although only one goal separated the two clubs Ajax dominated most of the match only to water down in the second half.
De Boer fielded the second youngest Ajax starting lineup of the season handing 19-year-old Lorenzo Ebecilio his Eredivisie debut. Former Ajax coach Martin Jol, who stepped down on Monday, said that he did not dispose of good attacking wingers but Ebecilio proved him wrong being a constant threat on the left wing.
Christian Eriksen scored from a Demy de Zeeuw assist in the 11th minute and Ajax could have wrapped the match up before halftime if amongst others De Zeeuw and Miralem Sulejmani had converted some good opportunities.
In the second half Vitesse tried to put pressure on Ajax and the visitors had difficulties to keep up their first half level of play. “That’s to be expected on a heavy pitch like this after our midweek trip to Milan”, De Boer said. The Ajax coach could not have wished for a better first week of his new job with the 1-0 victory at Vitesse and the 2-0 win at AC Milan on Wednesday.
