Twente vs Excelsior Match Preview

FC Twente are on top of the League for the first time since the last matchday of the Eredivisie last season. The title holders are the only undefeated team in the Eredivisie this season and they beat top ranked PSV 1-0 in an away match last weekend. On Tuesday Twente again showed great form when they defeated Werder Bremen 2-0 away from home in the Champions League.

The win against Werder was remarkable not only because it was Twente’s first Champions League victory in club history, but also because the team played without midfield duo Wout Brama and Theo Janssen. The injured Dutch internationals are doubtful for the Excelsior match this weekend. Against Bremen Denny Landzaat en Roberto Rosales played as defensive midfielders to replace Janssen and Brama. Nacer Chadli and Luuk de Jong scored the Twente goals.

Excelsior lost their last two Eredivisie matches without scoring a single goal, but the club managed a 2-2 draw at home against Ajax before that. Historically Twente have not much to fear when Excelsior come to visit. The club won ten of the previous 15 Eredivisie encounters at home against the Rotterdam squad and only lost twice. The last Excelsior victory in Enschede came on 9 April 1983 (0-2).

Twente vs Excelsior Match Report

After wins in big matches at PSV (1-0) in the Eredivisie and Werder Bremen (2-1) in the Champions League FC Twente seemed uninspired to take on Excelsior at home on Saturday. The title holders started on a false note when Leen van Steensel put the visitors 1-0 up in the second minute. A surprise goal for the 15th ranked Rotterdam club, who did not find the back of the net in their last two matches.

Without the injured midfielders Theo Janssen and Wout Brama, who also missed the Bremen match on Tuesday, Twente was struggling to find their usual rhythm. Nacer Chadli helped the Tukkers back into the match when he equalized in the 26th minute, but Luuk de Jong, who also scored against Bremen, missed two good opportunities to put the home team in front before halftime.

In the second half goalkeeper Nikolay Mihaylov miraculously saved Twente when he kept a deflected shot from Nayib Lagouireh out of his goal. After Wout Brama came on as a substitute Marc Janko scored the winner of an assist from Denny Landzaat and Twente made sure to stay on top of the league this weekend.

Excelsior’s goal scorer Leen van Steensel was proud of his team’s display, but regretted the result. “It’s nice to receive the compliments, but you’re not getting points for that. Scoring an early goal is fun, but I’d rather have scored the 1-0 in the last minute.”
