Hamburg was dealt with a blow from the international break as Marcell Jansen left the pitch injured in Germany’s qualifier against Belgium. Hamburg has done well so far and picked up six points from two games.
A win against Schalke in the first match just showed how much potential this side has to finally win the Bundesliga. A win against Frankfurt might be underestimated but Frankfurt is a tough side to break down and HSV did well to come from behind and beat Frankfurt, 3-1.
Nuremberg’s fortunes have been different. Following a good away draw against Gladbach, they fell to Freiburg in their own backyard, 2-1. From the international break, Nuremberg did not escape unscathed. Their on-loan star from Bayern Munich, Mehmet Ekici was injured while playing for the German U-21 side.
Nuremberg has an uphill battle awaiting them against the northerners. However, Nuremberg occasionally pulls off a big surprise. The northerners, HSV, will want to establish themselves as contenders and as a result will want to take three points from this one.
Hamburger SV vs 1. FC Nürnberg Match Report
Hamburg dropped points for the first time this season following a 1-1 draw against Nuremberg. The first goal came from where most of Hamburg’s goals seem to be coming this season: Ze Roberto corners. The evergreen ex-Bayern star’s corner found Joris Mathijsen at the far post. Mathijsen tapped the ball in for a 1-0 lead to Hamburg.
The referee awarded Nuremberg a late penalty after Hamburg keeper Frank Rost fouled Julian Schieber in the box. Javier Pinola stepped up and buried the spot-kick for 1-1. Hamburg controlled the possession but failed to score. A draw against Nuremberg is definitely not good enough for a side looking to challenge for the Bundesliga title itself.
