VfL Wolfsburg vs 1. FSV Mainz 05 Match Preview

Wolfsburg, despite having coming away with nothing, gave a good account of themselves in Munich. Mainz, on the other hand put in a solid display to beat Stuttgart, 2-0. Aristide Bance’s replacements Sami Allagui and the man loaned from Celtic, Morten Rasmussen both scored in the win for Mainz.

Wolfsburg’s best performer last week was definitely Misimovic; however, he is constantly being linked with a move away from the club to Schalke. As long as he is around, though, he should be in the starting line-up as Wolfsburg is quite toothless without him. Diego is rumoured to be on his way to Wolfsburg.

Both teams do not have any major injury worries this week. Sascha Riether will perhaps start ahead of Peter Pekarik at left back following Pekarik’s horror show against Franck Ribery last week. Mainz has brought in highly rated youngster Marcel Risse from Bayer Leverkusen on loan. He becomes the second youngster to join the club on loan following Schalke’s Lewis Holtby.

VfL Wolfsburg vs 1. FSV Mainz 05 Match Report

VfL Wolfsburg 3-4 Mainz 05

Wolfsburg had a 3-0 lead but squandered it as Mainz put four past them. Diego, the talented Brazilian debuted in a green and white short, not for the first time, in the Bundesliga. The difference was that this time, he was playing for Wolfsburg.

He wasted no time in linking up with captain Edin Dzeko. The first goal however came from a poor Mainz error. Wolfsburg keeper Diego Benaglio launched a long ball forward. The ball was headed by a Mainz player right into the path of Dzeko who went wide before hitting the target from a narrow angle for the first goal.

Dzeko linked with another new signing Mario Mandzukic for the second goal. Mandzukic and Dzeko played a beautiful one-two before Dzeko found the back of the net. Diego added a third after rounding the keeper following another error from Mainz in midfield. Mainz pulled one back amidst chaos in the Wolfsburg midfield before halftime through Morten Rasmussen for 3-1.

Elkin Soto added a second after half time for 3-2. The equalizer for Mainz came through Andre Schuerrle who struck from outside the penalty area. The ball went past Benaglio with plenty of velocity for 3-3.Adam Szalai completed the comeback with a fourth strike.
