Monterrey vs Necaxa Match Preview
Necaxa, in full David mode, slung a rock at Cruz Azul's Goliath and brought the league leaders down last week with a stunning and controversial 2-1 victory. Now, they will set their sights on an even more difficult task: handing Monterrey their first loss of the season.
A Monterrey win and a Cruz Azul loss could vault the Apertura 2009 champions to first place in the table; Necaxa will look to keep adding points to their collection and stave off relegation for as long as they possibly can. Easier said than done.
Since 2002, Necaxa have only won twice against Monterrey, and haven't won at the Estadio Tecnológico in ten years. Daniel Alberto Brailovsky's start as Necaxa manager has been promising. Facing three of the top four teams in the league (Toluca, Cruz Azul and Santos), the Rayos have obtained four points. Monterrey will look to extend their undefeated streak to ten; they are the only team in the tournament that has yet to lose.
Monterrey vs Necaxa Match Report
Upset-minded Necaxa were quickly dispatched by undefeated Monterrey, who scored two goals in the game's opening half-hour and quickly put the match on ice. The goalscoring tandem of Chile international Humberto Suazo and Aldo de Nigris put Rayados ahead in the 12th and 26th minutes, respectively.
In stoppage time, Pablo Quatrocchi avoided the clean sheet and pulled one back for Daniel Alberto Brailovsky's boys. The loss means that for at least one more week, Necaxa will remain as the lowest ranked team in the relegation table.
