Philadelphia Union vs Chicago Fire Match Report

Expansion franchise Philadelphia Union posted their first ever shutout in a 1-0 win over the Chicago Fire.

The Fire thought they had taken a 9th minute lead through a Steven Kinney header, but the goal was correctly ruled out for offside. Chicago threatened further in the 32nd minute, Kinney crossed from the right and it lad to a Freddie Ljungberg shot from six yards out, a good save by Brad Knighton kept the game scoreless.

Four minutes after Knighton kept them level, the Union took the lead. Good movement from rookie forward Danny Mwanga created space for Sebastion Le Toux, who collected a Justin Mapp pass and finished into the bottom corner.

Chicago tried to respond before half time as Collins John raced away, only to be thwarted by another save from Knighton.

Philadelphia defended stoutly throughout the second half to earn their 1-0 win. Chicago’s best chance coming when Calen Carr directed a 75th minute header over the bar.
