The Recent Tale Of The Community ShieldChelsea beat Manchester United on penalties to lift the 2009 Community Shield at the Wembley Stadium. The rest of the story saw the Blues enjoy a remarkable season as they edged past the Red Devils to win the English Premier League title before clinching the F.A Cup trophy to seal a historic double.
Manchester United, meanwhile, had to be content with the 2009/10 Carling Cup trophy as their quarter-final aggregate defeat to Bayern Munich marked a heartbreaking UEFA Champions League final campaign.
Before last season, and more precisely in 2007 and in 2008, Manchester United triumphed over Chelsea and Portsmouth respectively in the Community Shield. The Red Devils eventually tasted success during those respective campaigns.
The three last Community Shield encounters all required a penalty shoot-out to determine the name of the winner, and they have also featured only three different teams battling it out; surprise 2007/08 FA Cup champions Portsmouth, and England’s two fiercest teams Manchester United and Chelsea. Once again, the Blue side of London will affront the Red side of Manchester in what promises to be an interesting clash on Sunday, August 8.

Chelsea have been poor – especially defensively – during their training tour matches this summer. Lately, they succumbed to defeat against Hamburg. Now manager Carlo Ancelotti is well aware of how important it is for Chelsea to bounce back with a vital victory over Manchester United at the Wembley Stadium. The former AC Milan coach explained:
“For this, I think that we need to come back to win because we lost too many games, friendly games. But we are not happy to lose. We have to come back to win and start well.”
Carlo Ancelotti analyzed the importance of Sunday’s FA Community Shield game, saying:
“I think that for both teams, it is an important game because it is a very important check for the season. We want to look how our condition is. Also, because against Manchester United is never an easy game.
“We want to do our best. Manchester United could be the most important opponent this season like they were last season.”
Manchester United’s Alex Ferguson: Chelsea Are The Team To BeatManchester United aren’t in the best position to be assured of having a glorious 2010/11 football campaign. Besides the fact that doubts highly surround the expected performance of 2010 World Cup England flop Wayne Rooney, veteran player Ryan Giggs confessed that Chelsea would pose the biggest threat for the Red Devils.
The latest personality from Manchester United’s camp to echo the teams wariness against the Blues is Coach Sir Alex Ferguson. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, the illustrious Scottish manager revealed:
“With the experience that Chelsea have, you have to look at them being the biggest threat. They won the league and the [FA] cup last year.
“I do think you have to see the team that won the league as the ones you look at. I don’t see why anyone should think any different. Chelsea have the experience. You can’t dismiss them.”
Both teams have a bunch of players sidelined through injury. The top names that have been ruled out are goalkeeper Petr Cech, Alex, and Jose Bosingwa. Didier Drogba and youngster Daniel Sturridge should be made available for the encounter – although Drogba is expected to start from the bench. Besides, 34-year-old shot stopper Hilario will replace the injured Petr Cech ahead of Turnbull against the will of most Chelsea fans who are anxious about the club’s recent gaffes in goal post.
Manchester United, however, will be without Michael Carrick, Gabriel Obertan, Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand, Rafael and Fabio da Silva. Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen will reportedly have at least 45 minutes of game play while Antonio Valencia should also play a part in Sunday’s Community Shield encounter against Chelsea.
