West Bromwich Albion vs Tottenham Hotspur Match Preview

West Brom have signed former Wigan man Paul Scharner on a two year deal. Scharner brings additional flexibility to the Baggies as he can play either midfield or in the defense. Rochdale defender Craig Dawson has signed with West Brom too, although the Baggies loaned him back to Rochdale immediately. Marc-Antoine Fortune has returned to West Brom from Celtic, claiming no regrets about his foray to the north, yet admitting that he is happy to be back with the Baggies.

Spurs have signed Dutch international midfielder Rafael van der Vaart from Real Madrid on a £8m deal. Meanwhile, the call of international duty has taken a toll. Michael Dawson suffered knee and ankle ligament injuries in England’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Bulgaria last week. Dawson will miss six to eight weeks. Jermain Defoe, who scored a hat trick against the Bulgarians in England’s 4-0 victory, was stretchered off against Switzerland on Tuesday and is expected to miss six weeks.

West Bromwich Albion vs Tottenham Hotspur Match Report

With Jermain Defoe and Michael Dawson on long term injury recuperation the last thing Spurs’ boss Harry Redknapp wanted was an injury to key midfielder Luca Modric.

But such fears seemed to have materialized when Modric limped off after half an hour with what at first looked to be a recurrence of the broken leg that kept him out of action for a good portion of last season.

Even the quality of new signing Rafael van der Vaart wasn’t enough to lighten Redknapp’s mood.

Modric had opened the scoring in the match when he reacted to a rebound in the 27th minute and scored with a low shot into the corner.

Spurs were in command for the first half, with Gareth Bale once again displaying his exquisite talents and drawing post-match praise from his boss.

The Baggies 41st minute equalizer came against the run of play when Chris Brunt scored with a header from close in.

The second half saw a better Baggies side take to the pitch and to their credit they tested Spurs late on drawing a good save from keeper Carlo Cudicini off Odemwingie’s shot.

The share of the points will disappoint Spurs but news later that Modric’s injury looked worse than it was undoubtedly took the edge off Harry’s dismay. Modric is scheduled to travel with the club when they head for Germany to take on Werder Bremen in Champions League football midweek.
