Sunderland vs Manchester City Match Preview
Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has confirmed his interest in Wigan striker Charles N’Zogbia, who is rumored to have quarreled and fallen out with Wigan boss Roberto Martinez. N’Zogbia is also a target of Birmingham City.
West Ham’s Carlton Cole is also said to be on Steve Bruce’s short list of transfer targets.
Midweek Darren Bent scored twice as Sunderland moved through to the 3rd Round of the Carling Cup with a 2-0 victory over Colchester.
Sunderland drew 2-2 with Birmingham on the opening day of the season and then lost surprisingly to West Bromwich Albion last weekend. Their match with Manchester City this week may be a tight one, if history is any indicator.
A 1-1 draw was the result at the Stadium of Light last season, while a 3-2 win for City was the result at Eastlands.
Manchester City cruised to a 3-0 victory over a substandard Liverpool side last weekend, and what a difference a week makes. This side was together, unlike the 11 who played Spurs on the opening day of season and were kept in the game by Joe Hart single-handedly stopping everything that came his way.
The quality of Hart’s play is blocking Shay Given’s access to playing time and the Irish international will likely be looking for a move before the transfer window closes. He is too good a keeper to be sitting on somebody’s bench.
City winger Adam Johnson made his mark on the Liverpool match, turning Daniel Agger inside out on several occasions. With new signings Yaya Toure and James Milner in the midfield City look like they have a formidable squad this season.
Goals by Shawn Wright-Phillips and Derek Boyata in City’s 2-0 victory over Timosoara in the Europa League on Thursday (3-0 on aggregate) did nothing to dispel the notion of Citizens’ capabilities.
Sunderland vs Manchester City Match Report
Sunderland were determined to stamp their dominance on the match early on at the Stadium of Light but near the quarter hour mark City were in control and right on the 15th minute Yaya Toure set off on an exploratory run that soon turned threatening for Sunderland.
Displaying guile and pace that belied his 6’3” frame Yaya propelled himself rather expertly into the penalty box, drew the attention of the keeper and a defender, then passed square to Carlos Tevez, who needed only to side-foot the ball into a gaping goalmouth from 12 yards.
Proof that international footballers are human too came when Tevez somehow put his shot over the crossbar. It was the miss of the season so far, and may well remain so through May.
First half stoppage time saw another moment of unexploited good fortune for City when a free kick from the left took a deflection and landed at Yaya. The big man had only the keeper to beat but Simone Mignolet was up to the task and made the save.
It was 0-0 at the half, though City should have been one up
The second half saw Sunderland return to the field a different team. All the pressure came from the Black Cats and City keeper Joe Hart, a lonely figure in the first half, found himself in a match.
Yet City nearly scored again in the 79th when substitute Emmanuel Adebayor, finally getting an opportunity to play, flicked a back heel shot that was saved brilliantly by Sunderland’s young Belgian keeper.
Luck was not on City’s side on Sunday, however, and Sunderland dictated the agenda near the end as they had almost the entire second half.
The shocker came when Ahmed Al Muhammadi made a fine run up the right wing in stoppage time. His cross took a deflection and while attempting to get to the cross Sunderland striker Darren Bent was forced down in the box by City’s Micah Richards. Penalty kick!
The pressure on Bent to score must have been tremendous. But the Sunderland striker’s spot kick, though a poor one, was low and Joe Hart dived over it.
Three points to Sunderland and a shock to Manchester City.
