Chelsea vs Stoke City Match Preview
Chelsea scored six against Wigan last weekend, bringing their two-game scoring tally to 12. At the other end they’ve conceded nothing thus far.
The London club rumored to be interested in signing Argentine international defender Martin Demichelis from Bayern Munich. With the departure of Ricardo Carvalho to Real Madrid in the off season Demichelis would seem a prudent acquisition. The Blues have also been linked to Inter’s Nicolas Burdisso, another Argentine defender, but Carlo Ancelotti has denied interest in Burdisso.
With one Chelsea offer for Stoke City keeper Asmir Begovic already repulsed, Stoke have cautioned Chelsea not to make another, assuming they are thinking of doing so.
Begovic is thought to have refused to play in the midweek Carling Cup encounter with Shrewsbury, although the Bosnia-Herzegovina international claims he never refused, and that he had merely observed—presumably due to an enquiry--that his brains were “a little bit scrambled” at the time, which observation has been misinterpreted, claims the player.
Stoke boss Tony Pulis was forced to start Carlo Nash instead.
Begovic seems likely to be destined for the old heave-ho now, but Pulis has suggested that the club won’t let him go for an undervalued offer.
Stoke suffered a setback last weekend when striker Mamady Sidibe went off injured. Following the match manager Tony Pulis revealed that Sidibe apparently snapped his achilles tendon and may miss the rest of the season.
Chelsea vs Stoke City Match Report
Chelsea went off the boil on Saturday, if you consider winning by a mere two goals and conceding zero to be off the boil. Let’s just say Chelsea had cooled to a simmer this week as they beat Stoke City 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues could have been off to a flyer just 10 minutes in when Ryan Shawcross took Didier Drogba down inside the Potters’ penalty box. But Chelsea’s Frank Lampard failed to convert the spot kick and so the Londoners were forced to wait a little longer for their opening goal.
That goal came just after the half hour mark when Chelsea defender John Terry brought the ball forward and flicked a delightful and delicate pass forward for Florent Malouda who right footed the ball with just enough elevation to evade the arms of onrushing Stoke keeper Thomas Sorensen. It was Malouda’s fourth goal of the season.
Stoke manager Tony Pulis would have been delighted that Kenwyne Jones was passed fit to play today and in fact the Trinidad man’s contribution nearly got the Potters on the score sheet when he and Jon Walters combined to get the ball to Dean Whitehead, whose lobbed effort forced a save from Petr Cech.
Stoke nearly scored in the second half too when Glenn Whelan’s shot from distance hit the Chelsea crossbar.
Make no mistake, though, Chelsea were in charge and they surged forward often and with pace. One such surge in the 77th minute led to Chelsea’s second when Nicolas Anelka was brought down in the box by Sorensen. Drogba converted from the spot.
Chelsea have now scored 14 goals in three Premier League matches and they have yet to give one up. Not a bad start, eh?
