Blackpool vs Fulham Match Preview
Blackpool’s 0-4 victory over Wigan on the opening day of the season was a stunner, but only the most hardened Seasider would dare to suggest that the victory over the Latics was guaranteed evidence of impending EPL success. And indeed, the Tangerines came down to Earth with a thud against Arsenal at Emirates Stadium last weekend losing 6-0.
Blackpool manager Ian Holloway—away on other football business on the night--may now regret his decision midweek to miss out on his team’s Carling Cup tie with Milton Keynes Dons since the Tangerines showed further evidence of their potential frailty by losing to the League One outfit 4-3 in extra time.
To their credit the Tangerines came from behind three times in the 90 minutes with Brett Ormorod, Ludovic Silvestre and Charlie Adam all scoring. But ultimately the loss can only serve to shake Blackpool’s confidence this early in the season.
Fulham, on the other hand, gave no quarter in their midweek Carling Cup clash with Port Vale, destroying the League Two side 6-0 at Craven Cottage. A pair of goals each by Gera and Zamora did most of the damage while Dembele and Dempsey also put their names on the score sheet.
In their most recent Premier League encounter the Cottagers came from behind twice against Manchester United at Craven Cottage at the weekend and salvaged a point from the contest, largely due to the penalty miss by United’s Portuguese international Nani.
Goals from Simon Davies and Brede Hangeland, the latter making up for an earlier own goal that had gifted United the lead, saved the day for the Cottagers.
If the name Rafik Halliche rings a bell you deserve a chocolate. Halliche, a defender, played for Algeria against England in their 0-0 draw in South Africa in this Summer’s World Cup. Halliche, late of Benfica, has signed a three year contract with Fulham.
Blackpool vs Fulham Match Report
Following their 6-0 drubbing by Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium last weekend Blackpool could have been expected to take the field on Saturday against Fulham with their tails between their legs. Instead, the Seasiders made life difficult for the Cottagers, who were forced to come from behind to salvage a point.
But it was Fulham who got off to a lead in the 35th minute when Bobby Zamora thumped home a header off Moussa Dembele’s cross.
Blackpool’s equalizer resulted from some good fortune. Fulham defender John Pantsil must have become disoriented in the 71st minute and, rather than clearing a through ball that had infiltrated his penalty area, instead scored a fine goal for the opposition with a right foot shot any striker would have been proud of.
Less than five minutes later the Seasiders took the lead when Luke Varney, on his debut, took a through pass from Brett Ormerod and finished with a fine, low, right foot shot from just inside the penalty box. Ecstasy erupted among the Seasiders and their faithful.
But Fulham would not be kept down and Dickson Etuhu equalized in the 87th off a pass from Dembele and the two sides shared the points on the day.
