Manchester City vs Liverpool Match Preview
Manchester City’s opening fixture against Tottenham at White Hart Lane last weekend showed clearly that the squad has yet to gel as a team. Only the heroics of new Number 1 Joe Hart kept the Citizens in the game and manager Roberto Mancini must feel fortunate to have come away from London with a point following the 0-0 draw.
Their result against Romanian outfit Timisoara midweek was more promising as the Citizens carried the day with a 0-1 victory away from home. The goal came from new signing Mario Balotelli on his debut for the club.
This week the club announced they had finally agreed to terms with Aston Villa for England international midfielder James Milner, and as part of the deal Stephen Ireland will travel south to Villa.
Meanwhile Welsh wing wizard Craig Bellamy departs Manchester on loan to Cardiff City, his hometown club. Tottenham and this week’s opponents Liverpool are both said to be interested in acquiring Bellamy’s services but City is loath to sell the Welshman to a top four rival. Everton, too, is said to be interested in Bellamy but salary requirements seem to be an obstacle. Slovak international Vladimir Weiss also moves on this week, having signed a one year loan deal with Scottish champions Rangers.
And if anyone is interested in a goalkeeper there’s a pretty good Irish boy at City named Shay Given. Roberto Mancini says the club is prepared to let Given go if that’s what he wants, and why wouldn’t he?
Thursday’s Europa League encounter at Anfield with Turkish Cup winners Trabzonspor ended 1-0 for the Reds. Ryan Babel got the goal. Liverpool’s one goal lead is a tenuous one yet it didn’t have to be thus. Joe Cole missed a penalty!
Liverpool are hoping to rebound from a miserable campaign last season and last Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal at Anfield should provide some comfort the Kop.
Playing with 10 men after Joe Cole’s straight red card in the closing moments of the first half, Liverpool’s David Ngog nabbed the opening goal immediately following the break. The Merseyside men were very near to snatching the three points until Pepe Reina’s unfortunate own goal gave Arsenal a share of the spoils.
Liverpool gave it their all in the match, and that includes Javier Mascherano, who is looking to leave the club. Actually it’s not the club he wants to leave, he says, it’s England. (And many an expat might say “Who can blame him?”)
Manager Roy Hodgson has apparently offered to let the Argentine international go for the right offer, but that offer hasn’t yet arrived and with two weeks remaining in the transfer window, Hodgson, who says he wants Mascherano to stay, will likely hope no such offer comes across his desk.
In other transfer news Liverpool announced this week that they had landed Middlesborough goalkeeper Brad Jones as a backup to Number 1, Pepe Reina.
Manchester City vs Liverpool Match Report
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini will be a happy man following his team’s 3-0 victory over Liverpool on Monday. This wasn’t the unsatisfactory Manchester City that was so fortunate to draw with Tottenham last week. This was a side that looked like champion quality and they shone as they cruised to a 3-0 victory over a substandard Liverpool side.
City winger Adam Johnson sent Liverpool an early warning with a left foot shot from distance in the 8th minute that flew just wide of Pepe Reina’s goal. It was a foretaste of things to come as Johnson demonstrated his skills time and again made life difficult for the Liverpool defense.
Gareth Barry opened the scoring in the 13th minute following a delightful exchange between Johnson and James Milner on his City debut. Milner slotted the ball into the center for Barry who calmly side-footed the ball into the Liverpool net.
City were in full control of the match in less than half an hour, exercising a precision pass-and-move game that suggests the enormous sum they have spent in transfers since last season—nearly £200 million--is having the desired effect.
The victory was sealed by two second half goals from Carlos Tevez—the first with a doubtful touch that got the ball past Reina more through distraction than actual contact, the second a penalty after Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel brought Johnson down in the box.
In truth, however, Liverpool never looked competitive in the match, and although Steven Gerrard was a capable presence on the day—Liverpool’s only one it seemed—the absence of Javier Mascherano was obvious. Unfortunately for new Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson Mascherano is rumored to be out of Liverpool for good now.
