Fulham vs Manchester United Match Preview
Mark Hughes' Fulham side drew with Bolton 0-0 away at the weekend and they’ll be expecting to put on a better show in front of their home crowd this weekend.
The Cottagers announced the signing this week of 23 year-old Belgian forward Moussa Dembele from AZ Alkmaar on a three year deal. Dembele has been with AZ for the last 4 seasons scoring 24 times in 118 games.
Meanwhile former Welsh international midfielder Simon Davies has signed a new three year deal with Fulham.
No word at press time on the transfer request of Australian international keeper Mark Schwarzer, who wants to head over to north London to play for Arsenal. Arsenal have now had two offers rejected. Schwarzer didn’t play in the Bolton match last weekend, thus fueling speculation of a move. Officially, however, Schwarzer was suffering from a back problem.
Last time Manchester United travelled to Craven Cottage the Cottagers beat them 3-0. That was in December of last year. But three months later at Old Trafford United returned the favor, beating Fulham 3-0.
Don’t expect Fulham to win by any such margin this weekend. United dominated Newcastle at Old Trafford on Monday with goals from Berbatov, Fletcher and the aging, yet seemingly ageless, Giggs, who has now scored in every Premier League season. Giggs’ goal was laid on by another Old Boy, Paul Scholes, who seems to be in his best form in several years.
Wayne Rooney, on the other hand, failed to impress; playing time should sort that out.
Fulham vs Manchester United Match Report
Let’s all move to Manchester! A Fountain of Youth seems to exist there as Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes seem to be proving.
Scholes’ recent matches for United belie his impending dotage and he is playing the midfield the like Scholes of old. His opening strike to put United in the lead against the Cottagers on Sunday was classic Scholes: a thumping shot from distance low and just inside the Fulham goal post. It was the wee redhead’s 150th goal for his club.
The home side, however, was not to be cowed by the mighty Red Devils and indeed the Cottagers entered a period in the first half in which they controlled much of the play.
The second half started in similar fashion and Fulham’s equalizer came in the 57th when Damian Duff made a fine run down the right wing after beating Evra. Getting down toward the corner Duff passed the ball into the center for Zamora who fed an open Simon Davies. The Welshman hit it well and he needed to for United keeper Edwin van der Sar got his hand to the shot, just failing to keep it out. It was a deserved equalizer.
Misfortune struck Fulham in the 84th minute, however, during a period of United ascendancy. The ball careened off the knee of Cottagers’ defender Brede Hangeland and rebounded into his own goal to give United the lead.
Minutes later Damian Duff accidentally handled the ball in his own penalty area and the referee, somewhat harshly perhaps, pointed to the spot.
Substitute Nani was elected to take the penalty but Fulham keeper David Stockdale guessed right and saved Nani’s shot. United would ultimately rue the miss.
In the 89th minute, with Fulham pressing hard for the equalizer, Brede Hangeland made amends for his earlier mistake by getting his head onto a corner kick and directing it low and to the far post past van der Sar.
The draw seemed a fair result for Fulham, although United should certainly have taken all three points on the day. Perhaps we have witnessed Nani’s final penalty kick for Manchester United.
