Bolton vs Fulham Match Preview
Despite the transfers in of Martin Petrov and Robbie Blake, Bolton manager Owen Coyle seems bent on a youth development policy, having also signed young striker Tom Eaves from Oldham Athletic and teenage defender Marcos Alonso from Real Madrid.
Both young players are highly regarded by Coyle, who spoke to the BBC about youthful players in general and Alonso in particular. "He is an exciting young player who has undoubted quality and he will bring that into our mix. I think that we have a real talent on our hands.
"I have said before that when we are investing money in transfers that I want to do it with young, talented players. He isn't the finished article yet - he's a young player making his way - but you don't get through at Real Madrid without having a bit about you."
Although Oldham Athletic isn’t Real Madrid, it still means something when a youngster scores a hat trick against you, as Eaves did against Bolton in a friendly last month.
Meanwhile defender Nicky Hunt has been shown the door and will play his football at Bristol City in the upcoming campaign. And Coyle has revealed that he’s willing to listen to Blackpool offers for midfielder Chris Basham.
Fulham’s magnificent run in the Europa League last season undoubtedly inspired visions of EPL advancement among the Cottagers’ faithful, but the off season departure of manager Roy Hodgson to Liverpool must surely have hurt.
Now comes word that Australian international goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer wants out, citing a desire to play for London rivals Arsenal.
More bad news for new Fulham manager Mark Hughes came when defender Philippe Senderos ruptured an achilles tendon while in training. Surgery will likely keep the Swiss international out of action for much of the upcoming season.
The only new signing to report on Fulham’s behalf to date is midfielder Jonathan Greening, who has come in from West Bromwich Albion.
With Senderos out and Schwarzer likely to go, Hughes must surely be scrambling to bolster his defense.
Bolton vs Fulham Match Report
Bolton Wanderers controlled the play as they hosted Fulham at the Reebok Stadium Saturday but they were unable to break a 0-0 deadlock despite a strike by Bolton’s American international Stuart Holden that hit the post late in the second half.
Fulham’s new manager Mark Hughes started his first EPL match of the season without want-away goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, instead opting to give David Stockdale his second EPL appearance.
Australian international Schwarzer was said to be recovering from a back problem, but his absence fueled speculation that his recent transfer request had much to do with it.
Bolton’s Martin Petrov, whom manager Owen Coyle had snapped up smartly on a free transfer from Manchester City in the off-season, proved a valuable asset as his work challenged the Cottagers on a number of occasions. Big Swede Johan Elmander came close to scoring on several occasions but Stockdale was up to the task.
Overall it must have been a disappointment for Owen Coyle not to have his team nab the three points on the day. Mark Hughes, on the other hand, will likely be glad to put the Schwarzer issue behind him and get on with the business of molding his team.
