Wigan Athletic vs Blackpool Match Preview
Striker Jason Scotland may or may not appear in Wigan’s squad for the match against Blackpool on Saturday. Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has said that if Scotland’s move to Ipswich goes through as planned then he’ll be off to Portman Road. If not, Scotland will be involved in the match against Blackpool.
To bolster their back line Wigan have brought in Dutch defender Ronnie Stam from FC Twente on a three year contract, as well as Paraguay international defender Antolin Alcaraz, who was available as a free agent after the expiration of his contract with FC Brugge.
Rumor has it that Alcaraz, who signed with Wigan before the World Cup, was recently trying to get out of his Latics’ commitment in favor of landing a contract with a bigger club. Nevertheless, he has signed with Wigan now, and boss Roberto Martinez waxed enthusiastic over the move. "It's fantastic news that we can finally confirm the arrival of a defender who I feel was one of the very best at this summer's World Cup. This is a massive boost for the club and we are thrilled to welcome him on board.''
Stam and Alcaraz will be especially welcome additions given the recent departure of Titus Bramble for Sunderland.
In midfield 22 year old James McArthur comes to the DW Stadium from Scottish side Hamilton Academical. He joins fellow Scots Gary Caldwell and Jamie McCarthy at the DW.
Newly promoted Blackpool have brought in several players to bolster their Premier League ambitions. Most notable is the arrival of ex-Villa striker Marlon Harewood, who arrives on a free transfer.
The Seasiders face a mighty challenge to stay up in the EPL and have brought in several signings to help in that effort.
Defender Craig Cathcart comes over from Manchester United, and a trio of Frenchmen also arrive: striker Eliot Grandin from CSKA Sofia, midfielder Ludovic Sylvestre from Mlada Boleslav, and midfielder Malaury Martin from AS Monaco.
Disappointingly, however, at least from manager Ian Holloway’s perspective, is the club’s failure to secure the services of striker DJ Campbell, who was on loan to Blackpool from Leicester last season.
Wigan Athletic vs Blackpool Match Report
Wigan ended last season in wretched fashion as they suffered a thorough 8-0 thrashing by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in their final game of the season.
But as the new season dawned perhaps Wigan manager Roberto Martinez considered EPL debutante Blackpool a comfortable first opponent to ease his club back into the rigors of a Premier League campaign.
If he did he was to be crushingly disappointed. New Blackpool signing Marlon Harewood struck twice to build on the opening goal by Gary Taylor-Fletcher, thus giving the Seasiders a 0-3 lead going into half time.
A final strike in 75th minute by Blackpool’s Alex Baptiste rounded out the scoring for the newcomers and a miserable Wigan can now only lick their wounds and try to recover.
Reality will bite Blackpool at some point, perhaps next week when they visit Arsenal. But for now they can revel in a fine performance.
