Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester City Match Preview
Tottenham’s 2009/10 season was their best yet in the Premier League as manager Harry Redknapp led them to a 4th place finish and a Champions League spot. The pressure on Spurs this season will surely come from expectations that they finish among the top four again. Spurs may find themselves stretched, however, by unaccustomed European campaign activities.
There’s no doubt the London side have a squad of capable men, with the likes of Gomes in goal and Dawson and King anchoring the defense alongside Assou-Ekotto. But King is fragile so Dawson may find himself regularly partnered with Kaboul, Bassong or Corluka.
The presence of Modric, Huddlestone and Palacios in midfield may confine new signing Sandro to the role of supporting cast. Up front Jermain Defoe was last year’s main striker, but with the return of Robbie Keane from a loan to Celtic Defoe may find the spotlight on him slightly dimmer, and that may not be a bad thing.
Spurs discovered enhanced potency last season with the swashbuckling runs of Gareth Bale proving so effective on the left wing, and providing a delightful balance to the right side threats of David Bentley or Aaron Lennon.
Manchester City, who gave Manager Mark Hughes the heave-ho in favor of Roberto Mancini in the middle of last season, finished a strong fifth, four points behind Spurs and six ahead of Aston Villa. It was a ding-dong battle almost all year for the coveted fourth place position, and it became increasingly obvious as the season wound down that the battle for fourth would come down to Spurs and City.
Although Champions League action was an objective that City failed to achieve, the club has kept faith with Mancini and opened up a healthy war chest for transfers. Yaya Toure joins from Barcelona, David Silva from Valencia and Aleksandar Kolarov from Lazio. And at press time Mancini appears to have landed Mario Balotelli from Inter.
Questions linger over Craig Bellamy’s participation. The Welshman was famously rumored to be at odds with Mancini following the Hughes departure, so an exit would come as no surprise.
No question, however, that Carlos Tevez is sticking around. The pesky Argentine will share the attacking duties with Roque Santa Cruz.
Saturday’s match should prove an entertaining precursor to a renewed battle for 4th place and Champions League honors.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester City Match Report
Joe Hart’s return to Manchester City following his loan spell to Birmingham had an unfortunate side effect: he relegated one of Britain’s top keepers to the bench. Hart is apparently City’s new Number One, at the expense of Shay Given.
Hart repaid the faith shown in him by manager Roberto Mancini in spectacular fashion Saturday as his heroics at White Hart Lane prevented Spurs from running out to a first half lead that City’s performance on the day could never have overcome.
Three, four, even five goals could have been the home side’s tally as Spurs attacked with pace and conviction in a first half display that might fairly be described as breathtaking. But Hart’s performance was everything for City as he almost single-handedly prevented Spurs from breaching his goal. At the other end Spurs keeper Heurelho Gomes should have been charged for a ticket, for he was a mere spectator in the first half.
The second half was a more even contest with City pushing the agenda from the start yet never seeming to work their way close enough in to really endanger Spurs. Shaun Wright-Phillips might have given City a shock goal when he broke into the box with the ball but a fine desperation tackle robbed him of a chance to shoot.
Yaya Toure, David Silva and Aleksander Kolarov, new signings by City, failed to impress, although Silva showed flashes of skill that are likely to surface in spades as the season progresses.
