England vs Mexico Match Preview

Angela Asante, May 24th 2010
England Coach Fabio Capello said it; the Three Lions’ match against Mexico at the Wembley Stadium is a game that will be used to test the team’s form should the squad be hit by injuries during the World Cup.

Fabio Capello trains England players. In this smart idea, Fabio Capello has intentionally omitted the likes of Chelsea stars Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole, Joe Cole, and John Terry. Portsmouth goalkeeper David James has also been excluded from the Mexico encounter. Fabio Capello explained:

"The Chelsea players and David James will not play against Mexico. I needed them to train and stay with us. I also needed to check their physical situation so these five players won't play.''

Steven Gerrard is poised to make the most of Frank Lampard’s absence in midfield whereas Wayne Rooney will be tried as a lone striker upfront. Jamie Carragher, meanwhile, will play for the first time as a Three Lion since 2007 as the Liverpool defender finally returns from international retirement.

On Monday night, Fabio Capello could solve England’s goalkeeper issue. The Italian manager will give Joe Hart his second cap for England. During his time between the sticks, the on–loan Birmingham player will have to impress if he is to be given the unclaimed number 1 spot for the Three Lions in South Africa. Talking to Press Association Sport, Capello explained:

"I have confidence in Joe Hart. He will play 45 minutes against Mexico because it is important for him to play at Wembley. He did play in Trinidad and Tobago but the pressure at Wembley is really big. Hart has played a lot of games this season and has improved a lot."

Shifting to England's number one goalkeeper issue, the coach concluded:

"It is very equal between the keepers and they are all starting in the same position."

Now if England are using Monday’s friendly encounter to make final squad decisions, Mexico rather view it as a great opportunity to prepare for the 2010 World Cup in terms of pressure management and performance assessment as Arsenal’s Carlos Vela explained:

“The environment is incredible, the people live every game passionately and it will be a difficult situation to have the public against us. It will serve as preparation for facing South Africa as hosts. It will be a very important game as England are one of the strongest teams of the moment."

England vs Mexico kicks off at 19:00 GMT.
