Portsmouth vs Wolverhampton Wanderers Match Preview
Portsmouth, despite season-long financial problems that manifested most acutely for the players in delayed wages and sellings off of their compatriots have nevertheless shown and admirable fighting spirit that belies any notions of poor morale in the squad.
Yet despite their relegation to the Championship next season Portsmouth have proven in this campaign that they can rise to an occasion. No further proof of this was necessary than their win over Tottenham in the FA Cup Semi-Final at Wembley two weeks ago.
Nevertheless, manager Avram Grant and his men proved the point yet again last weekend in their come-from-behind 2-2 draw with Bolton at the Reebok Stadium. The result was a fair outcome for a match that Bolton had in their hands but that Portsmouth refused to give up.
Pompey come into the weekend with injuries to Nadir Belhadj (thigh), Hermann Hreidarsson (achilles), Danny Webber (knee) and Tal Ben Haim (groin). Jamie O’Hara, who has been out with a back injury, may be available.
Wolves lost 0-1 to Portsmouth at Molineux last time out and manager Mick McCarthy will be keen repay that favor with a win this weekend at Fratton Park.
Yet in recent weeks McCarthy’s team has been unable to muster anything better than a draw. They have three consecutive draws coming into this weekend, including last week’s come-from-behind 1-1 result with Blackburn Rovers at Molineux. Of their last five matches they have four draws and a loss.
Sitting 15th in the league Wolves are safely into next season’s Premier League campaign, and they fight now for pride.
Portsmouth vs Wolverhampton Wanderers Match Report

Having lost to Pompey at Molineux earlier in the season Wolves manager Mick McCarthy was undoubtedly looking to return the favor at Fratton Park.
But Pompey took the lead in 21st minute when Dindane got his head onto the end of a free kick to send the ball into the net. Replays showed that he may have been offside but the goal stood and Pompey were in front 1-0.
Wolves equalized in the 35th when Zubar’s header came off keeper David James and was pounced on by Doyle, whose initial effort was also saved by James. Doyle got another chance on the rebound and this time made no mistake, tying the game at 1-1.
The deadlock was broken in the 39th when John Utaka cleverly made space for himself and fired a left foot shot past Hahnemann.
The coup de grace came from a Michael Brown goal following counterattacking work from Smith and Piquionne.
Avram Grant made a show of gratitude to the Pompey fans following the final whistle. He has done well under the circumstances this season and clearly wanted to show the fans his appreciation for their support. Wolves manager Mick McCarthy, on the other hand, must be relieved that the relegation battle has been decided as his club would not have stayed long in the premiership with performances like this one.
