Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney once again stole the show scoring two goals as United completely outclassed AC Milan to win 4-0 at Old Trafford. The win gave the Red Devils an impressive 7-2 aggregate victory over the two legs and sends them through to the Champions League Round of 8 along with Arsenal.
United were once again fully stocked with healthy defenders at the back with Rafael on the right, Evra on the left and Ferdinand and Vidic in the center. Ronaldinho and company posed few threats to a sharp-looking United squad.
It was nearly the stuff of a Hollywood scriptwriter when second half substitute and returning Old Boy
David Beckham nearly scored on a rocket of a volley. It was right at van der Sar, and the big Dutchman stopped it, although such was the power and movement on the ball that elegant would not be the ideal adjective to describe the save. Few in the stadium would have grudged Beckham the goal had the ball gone in. His return, albeit in Milan colors, was clearly appreciated by the crowd.
This was United’s fourth consecutive win in all competitions, and although the Red Devils now sit upon the pinnacle of the Premier League table, it cannot be a comfortable seat. They are just two points ahead of Chelsea and Arsenal, and Chelsea have a game in hand.
United therefore cannot afford to squander points as they face up to Fulham at Old Trafford this weekend, but manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad choices are curtailed by injuries. Anderson, Wes Brown, Michael Owen, Ryan Giggs, John O’Shea and Owen Hargreaves are all out, while Jonny Evans is listed as doubtful.
Following a worrisome string of five consecutive Premier League losses in December and January Fulham come to Old Trafford on Sunday undefeated in their most recent five league matches.
Midweek, however, the Cottagers’ Europa League campaign took a beating with a 3-1 loss away to Juventus in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie. Chances of the Cottagers going through to the quarter finals are now slim. Perhaps they always were.
Currently 10th in the Premier League, exactly mid-table, the Cottagers needn’t be over-worried about Premier League survival. But injuries could be problematic as the season winds down.
Andy Johnson is said to be definitely out due to a knee problem. The spectacularly named Kagisho Evidence Dikgacoi is doubtful due to an ankle problem, and Danny Murphy and John Pantsil are doubtful due to a groin strain and a knee injury respectively.
The good news? American international Clint Dempsey has returned from injury and even made an appearance against Juventus. He, along with in-form striker Bobby Zamora, could prove threatening to the Red Devils.
Fulham beat United 3-0 at Upton Park in December so there is clearly a sting in their tail.
Manchester United will be in no trifling mood on Sunday as they work to shore up their position as league leaders. Sir Alex Ferguson, despite the injuries to his squad, is clearly an optimist, a trait undoubtedly buoyed by his team’s performance midweek against the Italians.
"When we play like that we are very difficult to compete against," Ferguson said. "With that team I've got, it doesn't matter who we play next."
Let’s put it this way: Fulham is next, and Sir Alex has every reason to be optimistic. But Chelsea comes to Old Trafford in April, and then disquiet may trump optimism.
