Everton’s top five pretentions have taken a serious blow with the loss of Marouane Fellaini for the remainder of the season. The lanky Belgian injured his ankle last week in a challenge with Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Liverpool’s big Greek center-back.
Kyrgiakos was red carded for the incident, the referee judging that the Liverpool man had gone into the challenge two-footed. Yet, although replays show the challenge was an awkward one, it didn’t look malicious. Fellaini’s response, on the other hand, looked decidedly mean-spirited. He appeared to stamp on the Greek defender and in so doing injured his ankle. The red card could have gone Fellaini’s way. And perhaps should have! Whatever his intent, the Belgian is now out for the season.
Everton is nothing if not a team with very good midfielders. But manager David Moyes must be concerned over their availability at the moment.
Steven Pienaar was sent off in the match against Liverpool and so he will be suspended. Tim Cahill limped off injured in the 2-1 win against Sporting Lisbon midweek, and may be questionable for the match against United. Mikel Arteta has recently returned to action following a long term injury but he doesn’t appear to be fully match fit yet. Leon Osman should be available, however, as should Landon Donovan. The American is fit and has been in good form, but he is clearly more a play maker than a winner of the ball. Everton will need ball winners against Manchester United.
United’s form lately has been pretty spectacular. Wayne Rooney in particular has galvanized the United side and seems to have imbued them a confidence that may have been lacking earlier in the season. The Red Devils are currently eight games unbeaten in the league, with six wins among the eight.
United met AC Milan at the San Siro midweek, and although the first 20 minutes were all about Milan, United got a grip of the game midway through and in truth, after Rooney got United’s second goal, the the Red Devils were never really in trouble. Milan looked lost for long stretches of the second half and except for a brief spell of pressure following Clarence Seedorf’s brilliant late goal, the 2-3 victory for United seemed a certainty.
Granted, Milan haven’t been at their best lately, but this was a big European tie on foreign soil, and
on such nights anything can happen. Rooney scored two of United’s three on headers, while Paul Scholes got United’s first when the ball caromed fortuitously off his standing leg and rolled into the Milan net for the equalizer.
Nani, who has been in favor lately, and indeed has played well, had a distinctly off night against Milan. Valencia replaced him and made an immediate impact. It was Valencia’s first cross after coming on that Rooney headed home for United’s second goal of the match.
Will Sir Alex continue to favor Nani over Valencia once league play returns this weekend? Wayne Rooney showed his frustration with Nani’s antics time and again on Tuesday and likely wouldn’t be shy about sharing his own opinion.
Defender Nemanja Vidic, who has been out of action since December for supposed nerve damage to his leg, claims to be healthy once again and has been actively squashing rumors of a departure in the summer toward Real Madrid. With Rio Ferdinand still to complete his four match domestic ban manager Sir Alex Ferguson would likely welcome the option of having Vidic’s unquestioned defensive skills available, if for nothing more than to be available as a sub for Jonny Evans or Wes Brown should the need arise.
"It's a difficult one,” said Sir Alex, expressing toward Vidic a degree of tolerance not commonly associated with the great Scot. “He thinks he feels he needs a lot of training. He has been training the last few days but doesn't feel he is ready to take part in games. That's something we just feel we have to be patient with, which we are at the moment."
In the previous match between the two clubs United carried the day at Old Trafford, dispatching Everton 3-0. The Toffees’ form has improved since that time and with the support of the Goodison Park faithful they’ll be seeking to prove they can get a better result this time around. But with the problems he has in midfield, manager David Moyes will have to be a very creative manager to provide Manchester United Old Boy Louis Saha with the kind of support he’ll need to continue to score as he has lately.
With just a point separating them from the league leaders, Manchester United will be keen to pick up full points at Everton, lest Chelsea increase their lead with a win over their weekend opponents Wolves. Everton Old Boy Wayne Rooney may be just the man to spoil the Toffees’ day.
