Fiorentina vs Bayern München Match Preview

Referee Tom Henning Ovrebro took center stage unfortunately when the Bayern Munich hosted Fiorentina at the Allianz Arena two weeks ago.

After sending of Fiorentina’s Massimo Gobbi for what appeared to be no good reason, he allowed Bayern’s Miroslav Klose to remain on the pitch following what appeared a more aggressive challenge.

Klose rubbed salt in the Fiorentina wound when he later scored the winner from an offside position.

Fiorentina’s goal, like all away goals in the Champions League knockout phase, looms large, however, and if the Viola can get one back and keep a clean sheet they’ll go through to the round of 8.

Yet league results suggest that Fiorentina will have an uphill climb to beat the Germans. They’ve won just once in nine Serie A matches and currently sit 10th in the league.

Nevertheless, Fiorentina have some sting in their tail and Bayern will have to beware Montenegran striker Stevan Jovetic and especially Italian international striker Alberto Gilardino, who has 11 goals this season.

Bayern meanwhile are two points clear of nearest rivals Schalke in the Bundesliga table and haven’t lost a match in any competition since November.

But they nearly suffered an upset at the weekend as 13th place Cologne held them to a 1-1 draw.

Bayern had to come from behind for the equalizer and with a little luck could have gotten a winner, as they hit the woodwork on two occasions. Yet the result proves that the Bundesliga’s top club can be vulnerable.

Bayern come into the match with some defensive concerns. Defender Diego Contento suffered a knee injury against Cologne. And although Daniel van Buyten has been declared fit again, Argentine international defender Martin Demichelis will be out for three weeks.

Despite Bayern’s defensive concerns, there is no doubt that Fiorentina will have their hands full on Tuesday. Bayern will be visiting Florence with top stars Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Mark van Bomell, Miroslav Klose and Mario Gomez among others all fit.

76'' Goal disallowed for Gilardino, who was well offside.
74'' Zanetti blazes well over as Fiorentina try to craft something against a crowded defence.
74'' Alaba, the 17-year-old makeshift full back for Bayern, is looking increasingly nervous.
72'' Fiorentina nearly fashion a chance for Zanetti, but Bayern just scramble it away. Gilardino looks very inventive every time the ball comes to him and he'll be the key concern for Bayern.
70'' Muller chases an expertly flicked ball from Klose but he's given offside. Fiorentina are the ones who need to step up now.
68'' Ribery puts in the free-kick but no one is able to direct it towards goal.

55'' In many respects, it's still the same equation as far as Bayern are concerned: they need a goal or they're out. They need to step up, though, as they've been second best so far in the second half.
54'' After a quiet spell, Jovetic has put Fiorentina two goals ahead as Gilardino brilliantly backheeled into his path, leaving him with a clear shot on goal from close range.

23'' Robben looks to take on two defenders down the right but loses possession swiftly.

20'' Ribery blocks the ball inside the area and there are appeals for handball. It didn't look a strong shout on first glance.
19'' Ribery uses his pace down the left before finding Muller, but he runs into a cul-de-sac and Fiorentina regain possession.

1'' There's an intense atmosphere in Florence and Bayern will have to calm the crowd down.
0'' The match is underway!
0'' Bayern will feel confident of progressing with their 2-1 advantage from the first leg, but an away goal is a precious commodity and they could end up out of the competition as they did at the Allianz Arena.
0'' Fiorentina, still without Adrian Mutu due to his provisional suspension after failing a drugs test, have Alberto Gilardino leading the line and Stevan Jovetic another dangerous option in attack.
0'' The bad news for Bayern is that injuries at the back have forced 17-year-old midfielder David Alaba to play in the defence.
0'' The big news for Bayern is that both Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben start the match. Ribery had a "slight problem" according to Louis van Gaal, while Robben missed the Cologne match with flu.
0'' The referee tonight is Alberto Undiano Mallenco of Spain and, after the mistakes of the first leg, he may feel he is under scrutiny tonight, particularly if any big decisions go Bayern's way.
