Netherlands vs Brazil Match Preview

Angela Asante, Jul 1st 2010
The mouthwatering Netherlands-Brazil clash will open the 2010 World Cup’s quarter-final fixtures. Both Brazil and the Netherlands have a typical attractive style of playing football, which is why millions of spectators around the world are impatient to watch live what will happen at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Friday. Kick-off time is at 14:00 GMT.

Brazil fans aligned in celebration.LiveSoccerTV.com takes you through a preview of the Netherlands vs Brazil match which you can follow live here.

Brazil Ready To Surmount Holland’s Threat

South American teams are dominating in South Africa with four of the five initial contenders all alive ahead of the 2010 World Cup’s quarter-final encounters. The only South American team to have exited the tournament so far is Chile. Notably, the Chileans were ousted by continental neighbors Brazil.

So A Seleçao top the list as favorites to clinch the 2010 World Cup trophy according to the majority of football pundits. Carlos Dunga’s non-English Premier League based 23-man squad did enough to top Group G before thrashing Chile 3-0 in the Round of 16 to set a date with Netherlands. Brazil boss, Dunga, believes that his team is only getting better. He declared:

“Some people were wondering if we would perform or not. Brazil Coach Dunga speaks at a press conference.

"But, as we go along that, our confidence is growing and growing. We wish to make it to the final.”

Indeed, Brazil played ‘ugly football’ to steal all three points against Korea DPR on Match-day One. Their second game against Cote d’Ivoire highlighted better performances than the one they had put against the Asians. Now even if their 0-0 draw against Portugal didn’t show their best side as football fans were expecting, the result was a good one to win the ‘Group of Death’.

More spark saw them defeat Chile 3-0 with Juan, Luis Fabiano, and Robinho all getting on the scoring sheet. Definitely, the Brazilians are getting better and only a few people dare to believe that Brazil’s 3-0 victory over Chile would actually come out to be their last in South Africa. On the contrary, others predict another easy win for A Seleçao but Coach Carlos Dunga prefers to be cautious as he sees the Netherlands as a dangerous side.

“The Netherlands have a great World Cup tradition. Besides, they are very similar to South American teams so we need to be extremely careful. They are a solid team. We need to prepare so as to be able to deal with very technical and excellent players.”

Gilberto Silva also gave his point of view on Friday’s Netherlands vs Brazil quarter-final battle by stating:

“Against Holland, we expect a very tough game because they’ve got good players that form a quality team. We could be in trouble if we give them space and we want to avoid that. Brazil have played against the Netherlands before in this kind of big World Cup matches. It will be an emotional game but I’m confident that we’ll do our job just as we did against Chile.”

The 2010 FIFA World Cup trophy.Netherlands vs Brazil: Head-to-Head History In World Cups

Actually, the story between the Netherlands and Brazil in World Cups is amazing. In terms of head-to-head meetings, Brazil have the edge although the Dutch can boast of a very slim advantage based on the number of goals scored. LiveSoccerTV.com shares with you brief memories from the past:

1974 FIFA World Cup:

Thanks to second half goals from Neeskens and Cruijff, the Netherlands killed Brazil’s 1974 World Cup dreams by beating them 2-0. A Seleçao had to settle for a third-place final match against Poland which they also lost 1-0 while the Dutch went on to lose 2-1 against Germany in the final.

1994 FIFA World Cup:

But it was pay-back time 20 years later. Like in this 2010 World Cup, Brazil and the Netherlands met in the quarter-finals of the World Cup which was held in the USA. After a goalless first half, the public was exposed to five goals in the second period. Romario broke the deadlock after 53 minutes before Bebeto doubled Brazil’s lead in the 63rd minute. Bergkamp and Winter thought to have staged a great comeback for the Dutch as they netted goals in the 64th and 76th minute.

However, if lack of concentration let Brazil throw away a 2-0 lead, Branco was present to break the Netherlands’ hearts with an 81st minute winning goal. Brazil went all the way to the final of the 1994 FIFA World Cup and ultimately won the cup. Brazilians will hope that meeting the Netherlands in the quarter-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup is indeed a sign of luck.

1998 FIFA World Cup:

The third and last time both sides met in a World Cup was 12 years ago. Once again, Brazil triumphed over the Netherlands. A penalty shoot-out had to decide which team would make it to the final. Former Brazilian international Carlos Dunga, Rivaldo, Ronaldo, and Emerson all converted their spot-kicks to help Brazil beat the Dutch 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 drawn game. As Brazil lost to France in the final, the 1994 World Cup remains the only World Cup where Brazil tasted glory after having met the Netherlands on their road.

‘Underdogs’ Netherlands: We Will See Who Will Have The Last Laugh!Netherlands players celebrating together.

For Coach Bert van Marwijk, the Netherlands enter Friday’s game as underdogs. His side reached the quarter-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup on a controversial note as a quickly taken free-kick led to Sneijder’s winning goal against Slovakia.

Although the Dutch are yet to display their best football, they have managed to win all of their four games so far. Bert van Marwijk is impatient to see his side coming up against five-time winners Brazil to show the world what the Netherlands are made of.

“I’m looking forward to this match,” he stated.

“For the first time in South Africa, we might be the underdogs against Brazil. But as we are here to win the big prize, we have to believe in it. When we said that we could win the World Cup, people might have mocked us. But, we are showing real mentality and a constant focus – which is what we need.”

Brazil’s defense is an enviable one, with Maicon, Lucio, and Juan depriving attackers from creating serious dangers. Likewise, the Dutch have a good attacking force engineered by Wesley Sneijder in midfield and composed of Arjen Robben, Dirk Kuyt, Robin Van Persie, and youngster Eljero Elia. Boasting about the Netherlands’ squad, Coach Bert van Marwijk declared:

“We can control a match. That’s what we’ve shown so far. We have scored seven goals and we’ve been able to show how well we play. Defensively, we’ve been good too. We have conceded just two goals. Heitinga, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, and our goalkeeper have done a great job. We are improving in every aspect, I think. But I’d like to see everything converge into one match. We just want to win [against Brazil] and I don’t think we’re doing such a bad job.”

The Netherlands have never gone 90 minutes of 2010 World Cup football without scoring a single goal –unlike the Brazilians who were held 0-0 against Portugal in the group stages. Besides, the Brazilians have conceded late goals twice already –against Korea DPR and Cote d’Ivoire.

Does that mean that lack of concentration affects them towards the end of a game? How well will the Dutch take advantage of any opportunity that may come their way to create another upset by sending Brazil home without medals?
