Both teams clinched victory on Match-day One. The Netherlands and Japan are just inches away from reaching the second phase of the tournament now. Anyone one would love to bet that the Oranje will confirm their status as favorites to win the 2010 FIFA World Cup with an easy way out past the Samurai Blue to make it into the Round of 16.
The Netherlands didn’t put up the best of performances against Denmark in their opening game of the tournament. However, they accomplished their mission by emerging victorious at the end of the match. The second half of their game against the Danes actually proved the Oranje’s potential in attack.
At an individual level, some players in the team certainly have to step up a little. Robin Van Persie, for example, was caught into anxiety as he failed to put his name on the score sheet despite possessing a decent amount of opportunities. Either way, Coach Bert van Marwijk has an enviable pool of talent to choose from in any case.
Young player Eljero Elia captivated the public’s attention when he came on as a substitute for the rather ineffective Van Persie against Denmark – not to mention that his shot against the post resulted in Dirk Kuyt rounding up Holland’s 2-0 victory.
The main positive point about the Netherlands as a strong force in this 2010 World Cup is that they are not a one-man team. At least, this is what the public understood as the absence of play maker Arjen Robben didn’t lead to an upset of the Oranje by the Danes. This factor, among others, has given reason for Robben to feel confident about the Netherlands’ chances in South Africa.
“There are many big teams at the World Cup with a lot of quality. I think we have a very good group of players, though. I also think we can achieve something in this World Cup,” the Bayern Munich ace declared.
The first step to a successful campaign could well be accomplished on Saturday afternoon when Holland will come up against Japan. Likewise, the Samurai Blue could also create history by becoming the first nation from the Asian Football Confederation to reach the last 16 in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Following Switzerland’s great upset of Spain last Wednesday, the Dutch will not allow themselves to fall into the pit of underdogs like Japan as Arjen Robben believes that “there are great countries, but there are still other nations left that might surprise the Netherlands”.

Actually, Japan are so desirous of stunning the world by reaching at least the semifinals of the 2010 World Cup that they are ready to do all that it takes to achieve their dream. Against Cameroon already, the Asian giants were surprisingly lucky to escape without many bookings as they were constantly guilty of numerous unprofessional tackles.
The Japanese are aggressive, fast, and also very well composed at the back. Defender Yuki Abe is eager to work out his business against the Netherlands.
“The Dutch know that their strength is based on their attacking forces. What we will need to do, therefore, is to try and frustrate them,” Yuki Abe explained.
Anticipating what will happen at the Moses Mabhida Stadium which Germany sanctified with a 4-0 trouncing of Australia last weekend, the Japanese defender continued:
“Wesley Sneijder will be getting himself all over the pitch, attempting to get hold of the ball. But there are other talented players in their squad. It will be hard to keep tabs on all those guys, so we will need to be on our guard.”
A draw between the Netherlands will all but ensure both sides of making it to the second round. In Saturday’s late kick-off, Cameroon and Denmark will also lock horns in a battle for survival.
