Germany vs Serbia Match Preview

Angela Asante, Jun 18th 2010
Serbia suffered a 1-0 defeat to Ghana while Germany enjoyed a comfortable 4-0 win over Australia on Match-day One of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. When both sides will meet on Friday at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth, who will have the last laugh?

Seating third in Group D with no point and a (-1) goal difference, Serbia are in danger of crashing out from the 2010 World Cup in the first round. The robust side, best known for its strong defense, was deceived by a spirited Ghanaian team that believed in its positive game plan from A to Z.

For Serbians, their regret is based on the fact that despite their defensive tactics against the Black Stars of Ghana, there were still numerous chances in attack for them to snatch a victory. Skipper Dejan Stankovic lamented Serbia’s loss on Match-day One, saying:

“It was a very negative start for us. We had our opportunities, but we couldn’t make the most out of them. Now, we have to show the desire to overcome our difficulties.”

The issue has become a do-or-die affair for the Serbians. They had a very good 2010 World Cup qualification campaign and they cannot afford to let their dream of shining on the world stage fade away by going too soon. Fully aware of Serbia’s condition and ready to bounce back, forward Milan Jovanovic called for courage against Germany. The player analyzed the situation, explaining to the media:

“Our defeat against Ghana as influenced our mood. We expected to win the match and we are all hurt by the failure to do so. We couldn’t accomplish our aim against an inferior opponent. Now we are in a position where it’s imperative for us to get as many points as possible against better teams than us [Germany and Australia].

Milan Jovanovic continued:

“Against Australia, Germany were very impressive. So far, this is the team that has made the biggest impact [with a 4-0 victory]. They are like a machine. They have seven players going forward. If we want to upset them, we will have to show no fear and also play at our best, because we will be facing a better team.”

Confident Germany Poised To Win AgainGermany's national football players running their way onto the pitch for their match against Australia.

Serbia will certainly need to play a game plan that will prevent Germany from the midfield to attack. Actually, Joachim Lowe’s boys are fast and looking for nothing else than to score. Bayern Munich’s trio composed of Muller, Lucas Podolski, and Miroslav Klose has offered Germany the perfect way to stay true to their style of play.

Milan Baros look alike Sami Khedira ruled out any sign of complacency from the German side, but underlined the team’s confidence ahead of the clash.

“The Serbians have a lot of quality. They have fantastic footballers. The game will be a very different one from what we played against Australia. Serbia are really fired up to play against us. They really want to beat us. If they lose, it will mean that they’ll be out. To concentrate from the start, just as we did against Australia, will be key. But we will win the match if we stick to our game plan.”

In fact, the Germans proved on Match-day One that Michael Ballack’s absence from the squad wasn’t a burden but rather the greatest source of motivation. The players in the squad seem very much aware of the extra effort that needs to be generated by each individual in order to cover all the obstacles that worried Coach Joachim Lowe in terms of squad selection ahead of the 2010 World Cup.

A 4-0 defeat of Pim Verbeek’s Socceroos of Australia; what more was needed for Germany to prove that they have the guts to do even better than they did four years ago when they hosted the tournament? In the German national football team, confidence looks solid and the patriotic love for the nation is certainly the motor that intensifies the club’s strength.

Anyone will just have to remember what happened in the knock-out stage match between Germany and Argentina during the last World Cup, when Polish-born Lucas Podolski’s Nazi salute in direction of Angela Merkel’s VIP seat in the stand pretty much sealed the ace’s commitment to the country. Well, the Germans are looking forward to emulating the last squad (which included the legendary Franz Beckenbauer) that won gold in the 1990 World Cup.

Defeating Serbia on Friday will not only seal their qualification into the last 16 of the 2010 World Cup, but also offer them a huge boost of confidence to achieve their dream of lifting the trophy come July 11.
