Serbia vs Ghana Match Preview

Angela Asante, Jun 12th 2010
Serbia and Ghana will lock horns at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria at 14:00 GMT on Sunday. Both teams will be playing their 2010 FIFA World Cup opening match.

Ghana's Stephen Appiah celebrating with Razak vs USA.Ghana On The Brink Of Making History

South Africa failed to beat Mexico on Friday, Nigeria bow down to Argentina on Saturday (despite all their pre-match warnings against Diego Maradona’s side). Now what will Ghana achieve on Sunday afternoon? Can they be the first sub-Saharan nation to record a victory in the first ever World Cup tournament held on African soil?

Ghana haven’t played a World Cup match since June 27, 2006. On that day, they were thrown out from the 2006 World Cup in Germany following a 3-0 defeat to Brazil in a match accused of being fixed. During the period of almost four years that followed this event, Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, have improved as a unit. Like Mexico, Ghana can also boast of a great blend of young and experienced players.

Captain Stephen Appiah, who skipped his side in Germany 2006, John Mensah, and Sulley Muntari offer some much needed confidence to the entire squad. Andre Dede Ayew Pele, Dominich Adiyiah, and Quincy Owusu-Abeyie inject excitement and pace in Ghana’s play.

Despite falling 4-1 to the Netherlands in a friendly match on June 1, Coach Milovan Rajevac is confident that his side will clinch victory against his native country Serbia come Sunday. The Black Stars defeated Latvia 1-0 in their last warm-up match last week. The team enjoyed a lot of possession and goal scorer Quincy Owusu-Abeyie finally broke the deadlock in the dying minutes to prove Ghana’s fighting spirit.

Ghana lost their first ever World Cup match to Italy 2-0 back in 2006. In order to avoid such a fate again, Captain Stephen Appiah explained the team’s will to win on Sunday.

“For now, we’re not even thinking about Australia. We are focusing on Serbia,” the Bologna midfielder stated.

He also ruled out complacency from Ghana’s side, saying:

“Everyone is talking about Germany and Australia. But let me tell you, I’m scared of Serbia because they are aggressive and technically, they are good.”

Serbia Ready, Ghana ConfidentSerbia players celebrate.

Talking about Serbia’s form, Stephen Appiah certainly made the right judgment. The Serbians will have everyone available for the match. It will be up to Coach Radomir Antic to make the right choices for the lineup. Zoran Tosic is expected to start on the left wing and to work out his tricks that led Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson to admit the resemblances between the player’s style of play Cristiano Ronaldo’s.

Meanwhile, Champions League winner Dejan Stankovic should lead Serbia’s defensive line with the help of Nemanja Vidic who finally recovered from his stomach upset.

Anyways, Ghana will also have Dejan Stankovic’s Inter Milan team mate Sulley Muntari on their side. The midfielder has set his eyes on a semi-final finish at least. Now Stephen Appiah made it clear that the Black Stars of Ghana will take it match by match. However, Hans Sarpei revealed his confidence ahead of Sunday’s clash against Serbia. He told the press:

“I would say that we are well prepared… The real test will be on Sunday, how we will be on the pitch against Serbia. This is our second World Cup in a row. We gained a lot of experience from Germany 2006, and nobody should underestimate that.”

In fact, Serbia will do anything but underestimate their African counterparts. They edged Cameroon 4-3 in their last friendly match ahead of the 2010 World Cup. They could grab their second victory in the row against an African team, this time, in the name of Ghana.
