Both countries will meet again on Wednesday evening in Kiev with only one ambition burning in everyone’s heart: qualifying for the finals of the World Cup in South Africa.
For the Ukrainians, the pressure has somewhat been taken off after they managed to keep a clean sheet in Greece.
Despite the fact that they were unable to score, the Ukrainians always looked to threaten the Greeks’ defense and a repeat of their performance on Wednesday could see them triumph in the end.
Shevchenko was arguably the star in the first leg of this tie and the captain will be keen to duplicate his excellent display but spice it up with a goal in his own country.
Ukraine enjoyed a good experience during the World Cup in 2006 but they crashed out against Switzerland on penalties with Shevchenko missing his spot kick.
The opportunity to redeem their World Cup dreams and hopes is wide open now after Ukraine secured an important goalless draw in Greece. They are now favorites to win over the two legs and book last-minute tickets for the finals in South Africa.

Meanwhile, the job on the Greeks is huge now. Since winning the 2004 European Championship in Portugal, the country has struggled to build themselves a fortress as one of Europe’s elites.
They’re still a very good side but now they face the prospect of mission out on the finals of the World Cup again.
They were absent in Germany 2006 and if they don’t score to win or draw in Ukraine, they’ll also be absent from South Africa 2010.
Looking at Saturday’s game against Ukraine, it tells us that Greece will have much to do in order to reduce the Ukrainians’ dominance.
The Greeks will enter the match knowing how much of a threat the home side may cause them as Ukraine are best known this year for being the only side able to end England’s 100% record run in the World Cup qualifiers.
Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Celtic’s striker Samaras both came close to break the dead lock towards the end of the thrilling game that was played last Saturday.
However, after failing to do so, they’ll need to find a goal at all cost to prevent the game from going into extra time or from ending with Greece being on the bad sad of the battlefield.
