Costa Rica vs Uruguay Match Preview

Angela Asante, Nov 11th 2009
Costa Rica and Uruguay are both two steps away from qualifying into the finals of the World Cup in South Africa. On Saturday, they clash against each other in Costa Rica.

It was only on the last day of the campaign that CONCACAF’s table was truly decided. The battle in the middle was hotter than ever but Costa Rica unfortunately stumbled to its pressure.

A victory would have assured them a place in the top three and ultimately given them automatic tickets for the finals in South Africa.

Unfortunately for Costa Rica, they let a 2-0 lead slip away to draw 2-2 against the United States and the points were shared.

In the other important match that was being played simultaneously, Honduras won by a lone Carlos Pavon goal to nil against El Salvador.

Honduras’ win and Costa Rica’s draw put both countries on sixteen points but Costa Rica lacked behind in fourth place due to the goal difference factor.

It could have been a different thing all together; the Uruguayans could have got a better end to the story of their World Cup qualification campaign.

Instead, they could not overcome their obstacles and they rather had to be content with a play-off place.

Uruguay’s fate also had to be decided on the last day as they hosted Maradona’s struggling Argentines.

They needed to win so expectations were high on their attackers to pull the trigger and kill off Argentina’s defense.

Unfortunately for the Uruguayans, they went down 1-0 through Balotti’s ‘miraculous’ goal for Argentina and they could not respond with a goal at the other end of the field.

A look at Costa Rica’s home form

Costa Rica’s home form was incredibly strong. They didn’t had a perfect record throughout the tournament but four out of their five wins were recorded on home soil and only one out of their four defeats came at home.

Ten home goals gave Costa Rica an average of two goals per matches played on home soil. They clinched tree clean sheets and conceded four goals – three of which came in a trouncing defeat against Mexico.

A look at Uruguay’s away form

In nine away matches, Uruguay looked more weak than strong. Two victories only, three draws, and four defeats marked by a poor amount of nine goals scored compared to eleven conceded just showed how terrible Uruguay’s form was away from home.

They’ll need to be at their best on Saturday before they get another bad result that will leave them with so much work to do in the return leg.
