Chelsea vs Manchester United Match Preview

Angela Asante, Nov 4th 2009
On Tuesday, both Chelsea and Manchester United enjoyed the great feeling of qualifying into the last sixteen of the UEFA Champions League with two games to spare.

Dimitar Berbatov trying to escape the challenges put by Chelsea's John Terry and Ricardo CarvalhoNow their attention will switch to the fight at the top of the English Premier League as they’ll clash against each other on Sunday afternoon.

Chelsea statistics and analysis

The Blues are swinging at the top of the Premiership table with 27 points and two above rivals Manchester United.
Their record at home has been the best in the competition so far:

Five wins out of five matches played at Stamford Bridge are mainly characterized by Chelsea’s goal instinct and great defensive work.

The Londoners have netted fifteen times at the Bridge and conceded only once – that was on the first day of the league when Hull City’s Stephen Hunt got them behind with the opener.

This statistic means that Chelsea have got a perfect average of three goals per match played at Stamford Bridge. This puts them ahead of Manchester United who have scored thirteen goals and allowed seven in as much as six games.

Chelsea have also bounced back from their 2-1 defeat away to Aston Villa back in mid-October with two overwhelming victories against Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers in the English Premier League.

In fact, Chelsea’s form upfront is far from showing signs of breakage. Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard especially are the two men that cause most of the damage to defenses.

The public will be curious to see how Manchester United’s back four deal with not only this duo, but also the rest of the Blues’ players who are all susceptible to cause worries in front of goal.

Manchester United statistics and analysis

The Red Devils are one victory short off Chelsea as they’ve won eight games, drawn one, and lost twice (just as much as Chelsea).

Like the Blues, Manchester United’s two defeats in the English Premier League occurred away from home. The defending champions were left stunned against Burnley and Liverpool earlier on.

Darren Fletcher, Wayne Rooney, and Berbatov celebrate Nani's opener against ChelseaThe Red Devils will have to improve against Chelsea as their away form this season has proven to be inconsistent.

They’ve picked up those two defeats amid three victories, meaning that they’ve lost six possible points out of the fifteen available. These results live Manchester United two points behind Chelsea in the league standings and their goal difference is far from matching Chelsea’s.

Manchester United have a twelve-goal advantage whereas Chelsea have a twenty-goal advantage.
Either way, the importance will be on Sunday’s result at the Bridge.

It is still early in the English Premier League to single out one team as the clear winners of the competition.

However, Manchester United know that a defeat will affect their quest for a fourth consecutive English Premier League crown as it means that they’ll be five points off the leaders Chelsea.

Besides, the Red Devils could even find themselves seating third at the end if Arsenal beat Wolves away from home on Saturday evening.
Meanwhile, a draw will keep both Chelsea and Manchester United above Arsenal, Manchester City, and the rest of the teams in the group.

On the contrary, a victory against the Blues will see Manchester United return at the top of the table with one point above Chelsea.

Chelsea v Manchester United: My PredictionsPatrice Evra tackling Chelsea's Didier Drogba

Sir Alex Ferguson will have to win the tactical battle and his players will have to be at their full best if they want to defeat the Londoners at Stamford Bridge.

After losing away to Liverpool the last time that Manchester United affronted a team from the big four, much work should be accomplished on the side of the Red Devils.

I do not see Manchester United matching Liverpool and Arsenal’s recent record of defeating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Either Chelsea will win (2-1) to put more pressure on the English Premier League defending champions, either the game will end in a draw (2-2 or 0-0).
