England vs Brazil Match Preview

Mike Gonçalves, Feb 4th 2013
Wembley Stadium will welcome some of football's most talented players in today's game as England hosts Brazil.

In celebration of the FA's 150th anniversary, England will get a chance to square up against Brazil at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday night.

Brazil, five time World Champions will get a chance to show the world their abilities under Luis Felipe Scolari who just recently returned for his second stint with the Selecao.

The former Portugal manager is back at the helm in his native country where he led the Brazilian side to their fifth World Cup title. Along the way, Brazil managed to win all their matches including their three Group Stage matches.

During his time with the Brazilian National Team, Scolari had come under fire for some players who he picked or did not pick, but that is what sets Felipao aside from the rest. He is there to do his job and he could care less what everyone thinks of his selection.

For his first selection, Scolari chose to bring back some familiar faces such as Ronaldinho and Luis Fabiano. Kaka, who had recently returned to the Selecao and actually scored, was left out of Scolari's selection.

England manager Roy Hodgson does not have the same selection options as Brazil, but he will want his side to bounce back after their defeat against Sweden.

Daniel Sturridge, Michael Carrick and Jermaine Defoe will all be forced to miss this match due to late injuries picked up.

Knowing his opponent has a lot more options to choose from, Hodgson believes that is how it should be.

"That is how it should be if you are a manager of a top footballing nation," said Hodgson. "A country like ours should have a couple of good choices in each position. The Brazilians certainly do."

"I am looking at their squad and there's probably another 10 or 12 that we could name that could easily have got in there. It might be nice if one day all our discussions focused around how you have two fantastic left-backs, three fantastic right-backs, eight fantastic center-backs."

The England manager will get a chance to test his side against one of the world's elite teams, despite the Brazilians not being in the top 10 of FIFA's latest ranking results.

Prediction

We have to go all the way back to 1990 when Gary Lineker scored the only goal of the match to give the Three Lions a victory over Brazil. Since then, it has not been smooth sailing for the English outfit.

Brazil has not lost in their previous eight meetings with England. Their last victory in an official match came in June of 2002 when goals from Rivaldo and Ronaldinho eliminated Sven Goran Eriksson's side from the World Cup in Korea/Japan.

From that team, the only returning player for England will be Chelsea defender Ashley Cole, who will reach his 100th international cap for the Three Lions.

The Brazilian side has been struggling as of late, which eventually led to Scolari taking over the manager position.

Scolari knows this team very well and the players know him and his style of play. It may be easy for some players to adapt to him as they have worked for him before, but their may be others who could take some time to adjust.

When you look at Brazil's star studded roster, you can only scratch your head and wonder how any coach is able to not succeed with so much talent.

Well, Mano Menezes managed to take Brazil on an emotional rollercoaster which led to his dismissal. Surely Scolari should be able to set things straight, but their is no guarantee that he will not annoy some people along the way who disagree with his choices.

The England players will be aware of the challenge they are up against, but playing at home at Wembley Stadium, they should be highly motivated to do well.

They head into the match as underdogs and against one of the world's most prestigious and talented squads, what do they have to lose?

Hodgson will make sure his side is aware that although they must respect their opponent, they have the same chance as Brazil to win the match.

Current form will not really matter for this match as Brazil will face a transition stage with Scolari in charge, and Hodgson's players will want the FA celebration to go well. Fans should expect an entertaining match with the English side trying to prove that they can compete with the world's best. Meanwhile, some of the Brazilian players will be wanting to show that Scolari made the right choice in selecting them.
