AC Milan vs Lecce Match Preview
Milan's quiet transfer season obscured a strategy to bring back Ibrahimovic to Serie A. The Swede left Inter for Barcelona last summer, a move that saw Samuel Eto'o go the other way. Yet, after just one season, during which he was eminently unremarkable, Barca coach Pep Guardiola has deemed him surplus to plans. His temperament, the scourge of his past experiences at Ajax and Inter, proved too much for the Barca locker room. Rumour has it that he was unwilling to defer to the talent of Lionel Messi on the field. The Argentinian, who is the best player in the world, has had the team moulded to his talent. When he moved to Juventus from Ajax, Ibrahimovic once said, "he is no one's sub." Then, he was 23. Now he is 28, and he quite simply could not brook the special treatment handed out to Messi.
This is all media speculation, of course, but certainly plausible speculation. The fact that Ibrahimovic's agent, Mino Raiola, is perhaps the most odious figure in football does little to help the Swede's case. After all, not for nothing are Barca considering legal action against the portly moneymaker.
If Milan do manage to bring in Ibrahimovic it will dramatically impact their season. Last year, they lacked that spark which Kaka' provided before his transfer to Real Madrid (which has proved an injury nightmare for him). With Pato and Ronaldinho, Ibra would form a spectacular attack.
Add to that prospect, the 23-year-old midfielder, KP Boateng, whom Milan acquired through a loan from Genoa, and you can see why there is a creeping feeling in Italy that Milan could depose champions Inter.
There are still weak spots in the Milan line-up. Their full-backs--currently Papastathopoulos, Zambrotta, and Antonini--are definitely decent, but not world class. Papa was signed from Genoa and looks very promising, but it remains to be seen how he performs at a bigger club.
Milan will play Pato and Borriello up front with Ronaldinho given the freedom to drift to wide positions behind them. When Ronaldinho does venture wide, Seedorf and Pirlo will take up the creative duties from a more central role. There is also a chance Boateng may start from the outset, leaving Massimo Ambrosini on the bench. Nesta and Thiago Silva will start in the center of defence, while Abbiati will take his place in goal.
Lecce won promotion but look prime candidates for Serie B. Chevanton returns from Sevilla, but the team, once the toast of attacking football under Zednik Zeman, look like they do not have what it takes to amass the necessary points to stay up. In Corvia, however, they do have a very capable striker.
Milan have started slowly for several seasons running, and with the Ibrahimovic distractions, this could end up in a surprise draw. Still Milan will edge Lecce 2-1.
AC Milan vs Lecce Match Report
Milan welcomed new signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic in style, as they dismantled Lecce 4-0 at the San Siro. Ibrahimovic was looking on from the stands, grinning at the sparkling football Milan put on display.
Pato opened the scoring in the 15th minute, finishing with an angle drive past Rosati. Thiago Silva added a second from close range after Lecce failed to clear a corner, and it was Pato again moments later who made it 3-0 by latching onto a brilliant Ronaldinho through ball and finishing by rounding the goalkeeper.
Milan threatened to turn the game into a comprehensive drubbing, but they were guilty of profligacy, which they could afford given the comfortable lead they had built up. However, Inzaghi added a fourth goal in the final few minutes of the game to take Milan to the top of Serie A.
It was a welcome result for Milan, but one that portends a miserable season for Lecce.
