This week in From The Vault, D. C. United defeated the Columbus Crew in an intense second round playoff match. 1998 MLS MVP, Marco Etcheverry and Tony Sanneh scored for the Black-and-Red on October 11, 1998. The Kansas City Wizards lifted the MLS Cup trophy for the first time in their history defeating the Chicago Fire 1-0, on October 15, 2000. The game marked the first time D. C. United did not compete in the final. The U. S. Mens National Team defeated Cuba to remain undefeated in World Cup qualifying on October 14, 2008. It was their 6th consecutive qualifying win. A year later on October 11, 2009, the USMNT’s Jonathan Bornstein equalized in stoppage time against a Costa Rican side fighting to qualify for the 2010 World Cup. The draw placed the USA a top the group and provided Honduras with their countries first trip to the World Cup. On October 15, 2011, Richie Williams was inducted in D. C. United’s Hall of Tradition. Finally the USMNT played their most recent match at Robert F. Kennedy stadium against New Zealand in a friendly which resulted in a 1-1 draw on October 11, 2016.
