The Uruguayan shot-stopper was harshly criticized throughout the world for his mistake against France, but there was a story behind it that few were aware of.

Sometimes fans blast footballers for their poor performances, as if some thought they were machines without any feelings. The following story has to do with what Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernando Muslera went through during the hours that lead to La Celeste's match against France, in which he had a decisive role by conceding Griezmann's second goal after a huge mistake.

Information gathered by El País shows that the Uruguayan goalkeeper had to deal with the loss of a couple of relatives in the last week. The same day in which Uruguay beat Portugal, one of his closest uncles died, and two days later, his grandmother passed away. This led to believe that Muslera could be dropped from Uruguay's Starting XI that faced Les Bleus, but coach Oscar Tabárez stood by his goalkeeper.

The goalie asked the team's press department to keep this under wraps prior to the game, since he wanted to dedicate his performance to his recently deceased relatives. Now, as Uruguay was shown the exit door from the competition, the news has been revealed in an attempt to soften the harsh criticism he's suffered.

Muslera found it in him to apologize for his mistake, even if he could have easily asked to be dropped from the team due to the hard times that his family was going through.

"My mistake sunk all our hopes. I want to apologize to my team-mates and to all the people that support us, but I'll try to find the strength to keep going," Muslera stated.
