The Croatian midfielder has cautioned Messi and his compatriots after securing victory in their opening game against Nigeria.

Luka Modric was voted the Man of the Match in his country’s 2:0 win over a weak-willed Nigerian side in Friday’s Group D encounter. The Real Madrid midfielder topped up an impressive display in the night's encounter by burying a spot kick to seal the win after a first-half own-goal by Nigeria's Etebo placed his side in the driving seat.

Currently, Croatia seats in the first position in Group D after Iceland and Argentina played out a 1-1 draw in a game that saw Lionel Messi miss a penalty. Speaking after receiving his Man of the Match award, Modric was optimistic that the win over Nigeria will spurn Croatia on to get the results against Argentina in their next game.

"They [Argentina] have huge amounts of quality, but this win will boost our confidence and we will up our game," he said.

"We'll play a good game against Argentina. I hope we will take some points but it's going to be tough.

"They have to play for a win because of [Saturday's] score, which was unexpected for them, but it's an important game for us and we will try to play our best."
