The Egyptian winger is aiming to smash one of the legendary Ian Rush’s longstanding Liverpool records.

Mohamed Salah reached a milestone of 40 goals this season with his strike in Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Bournemouth during the weekend. As per the football archives, the finish left the former AS Roma forward just seven goals away from Ian Rush’s tally of 47 in the 1983/84 season – the most goals scored in a single campaign.

Ideally, Salah has six games left of the season to try and surpass this feat although there’s the likelihood of the number of matches becoming seven should the Reds progress to the final of the UEFA Champions League. In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, the winger commended his goal return for the Merseysiders this season and also relished the prospect of usurping Ian Rush’s record.

"There's a big chance to break the record, to be number one for a club like Liverpool, it's something huge," said Mo Salah.

"I will be very happy if I break it. I'm happy about 40, I want to keep scoring, I want to be number one for the record.

"It's always good when you see your name with legends of a club like Liverpool, it's a different feeling and I'm very happy about that," he added.

"But I always try to look at myself and I want more. I have 40 now, I'm telling myself, 'Why not? You can be number one!'

"I will try my best to break the record but, as I've said before, we play as 11 players, I play for the team.

"It's not about individual awards, it's something for the team. I'm sure if I have a chance to give it to someone else to score, I will - it's not about me, it's about us."

Liverpool’s next test will be away to the struggling West Brom and Salah may as well start his quest to overthrow Ian Rush with an ace performance coming up against the bottom dwellers.
