This week in From the Vault, the Washington Diplomats rallied for a 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps on July 18, 1979. The Summer Olympics kicked off at RFK with 4 men’s and 2 women’s matches played this week in 1996. D. C. United got goals from Jaime Moreno, Carlos Llamosa and Pete Marino to defeat Newcastle United 3-1 in an international friendly on July 22, 2000. D. C. United defeated Blackburn Rovers 6-5 on penalty kicks after playing to a 1-1 tie in regulation on July 23, 2003. One of the longest games in MLS history took place on July 23, 2008 when D. C. United loss to the Houston Dynamo, 2-0. The game took 4 hours and 44 minutes to complete when lightning and rain caused a power outage that delayed the game for 2 hours and 54 minutes. The game concluded 20 minutes after midnight. The Washington Freedom won their final game at RFK defeating the Saint Louis Athletica 1-0 on July 18, 2009.
